The Role
Under-worked for the first few weeks so placement was boring to begin with. When I had work it was good. Atmosphere is quite relaxed.
Easily accepted into the team and trusted with team activities/information.
Worked mostly independently on my tasks but support was around when needed
Quite often under-worked so bored at my desk
Given critical process tasks to complete independently and often had to prepare for and chair meetings. Work was checked where necessary by a college before distribution to a wider audience.
Didn't feel that I'd learnt anything groundbreaking during the placement, I wasn't put in many stretching circumstances. Obviously the experience will have developed some inter-personal/business skills and will benefit any group work in the future.
The Company
Good atmosphere within the teams in the office, but not much mingling between different teams.
HR/IT and building access issues in the first few weeks so not well organised as it shoudl have been no suprise I was turning up.
Most training is on the job gained by experience, which is what you want to complement uni studies. No formal taught sessions were put on.
Quite possible I will get a graduate scheme placement which looks like a good next step in my career as an engineer.
The Culture
Apprentice Association put on a number of activities, go-karting, mini-golf and weekly causal sports etc and as interns we had a few nights out and met each day for lunch, so was pretty good.
Depends massively on which part of the city you live in for rent.
Bristol is big enough to have a good nightlife.
Apart from activities put on by the company, no we weren't put in contact with external activities.
