The Role
A brilliant working environment, with many opportunities to learn lots about working in industry.
The work I was set had a real impact to site, with the outputs of every project benefiting not only my development.
My line manager was always there to answer any questions I had about work or otherwise. He was always looking for jobs that were happening on site that would be good for me to involved with.
Whilst learning the ropes during the first month or so there were definitely some quite days. However as I learnt more and proved myself able my days filled up just the right amount.
Once the initial learning phase had passed and I knew enough people I was given real projects to manage. This was especially true in the last couple of months of the placement were I was given responsibility for some confidential quality investigations which has the potential to have a big impact to the site.
The skills learnt at GSK are going to prove invaluable when I'm back studying and even more so when I'm applying for graduate schemes.
The Company
There was a good balance of a working environment and relaxed atmosphere. The mechanical technicians were a tad more laid back than in my office and they have no problems with me coming down and taking breaks with them when I wanted.
The work I undertook wasn't planned, however I firmly believed this made the placement better. The site had real problems which were happening on a day to day basis. If something happened which I could involved with then my line manager would get me involved. Any organised events were done so professionally with little or no issues.
During the majority of my time there all work projects were undertaken with my development being the driving factor to get me involved. The last month or so I was completing work as I had the skills to do so, not so much for my further development. This didn't make a marked impact on the rest of the year however.

I had a end of year review with my line manager and I've recieved a recommendation for both a direct entry role and the GSK graduate scheme. Although I've come to realised I' rather work in a different industry, the prospect of working at GSK again is definitely a positive one.
The Culture
Ulverston was a small site with only 3 placement students, hence there was a limited social scene. Nearing the end of placement, many more students joined and the social scene was much better.
Ulverston and the surrounding area is very cheap.
The nearest nightclub was in Barrow which isn't the nicest place. Ulverston had good pubs, but not much of a buzzing nightlife. However I do believe nights are made more by the people you're out with, not the place, so saying that I had some really good nights.
I got involved with some charity work through the company and a became a STEM ambassador. There were opportunities for hiking and football also.
