The Role
I have probably enjoyed my placement for the first 3 months only. It was nothing as I expected, no real responsibility or technical knowledge to be used. The most technical it got was to the extent of using Microsoft Office, mainly Excel and Word, if these can be considered technical skills.
There was no team work whatsoever. The main feeling that I had during one year of placement, was being an admin person rather than someone coming from a Computer Science degree with a high level of technical knowledge that can contribute to the team.
I received no support from my manager, even though he was aware of my technical skills. Unfortunately, he wasn't a technical person at all, having studied a degree not related to Computer Science. When requested to move to a technical team that was more of a burden for my team so the idea was rejected straight away.
In my first 2-3 months I was fairly busy, afterwards I could have probably finished my work in 4 hours.
As mentioned above, there was no responsibility at all. The interns are seen more as admin people. It got to the point where my team was inventing things for me to do, rather than working on something real, to build my knowledge and improve my skills.
There was NO training provided for the duration of 1 year of placement that could be used in a different workplace or at university. Related to the skills improved, probably slightly improved my soft skills.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very dull, everyone see so bored and not enjoying their job. The communication was minimum.
There was nothing to be organised. There were no events planned by the company. The first and second day of the internship were more of an introduction to the company and the division you were allocated. Other 2-3 events that existed were planned by a couple of interns. Every placement was allocated a "custodian" apart from a line manager. Unfortunately the custodian was an employee shared among at least 10 interns. It was difficult to schedule a meeting and I personally didn't find that useful at all.
There was no investment in placement students at all.

Subsidised Canteen

Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Even if I would get a job I would not want to go back there. I didn't even apply for a graduate position.
The Culture
Because the head office was all the way in Brentford it was hard to have social events. There were a few, but no way near as many if the office would have been in Central London.
The cost of living was acceptable.
There was no nightlife in the area, as the office was on the outskirts of London.
There were a few opportunities to get involved in charity work, or sport events.
