The Role
Fantastic and formative year, can't stress how amazing it was!
Became a key member of the team with a lot of responsibility given to me, played important roles in multiple projects.
Very supportive office, answered all my questions - but often very busy and not around, so needed to use my own initiative quite a lot.
Had the odd boring day, but nearly everyday I was very busy - exactly how I like it.
A lot. They really will give you as much responsibility as you can earn during the year, access to the compound store, radioactive compounds, project samples, restricted area access and an entire project to run on my own.
Most of university if theoretical, and if some of it is lab based the experiments and spoon fed and time pressured. Having the opportunity to research and develop my own lab based project allowed me to acquire a lot of practical skills, not to mention the numerous other lab work my supervisor trained me to do for his PhD work.
The Company
Everybody was lovely, we had a cake rota and regular coffee breaks that some of the team would always turn up to. On the other hand, it was very quiet in my office - which was great for me as I need quiet to work but not everyone's cup of tea.
Overall very good. My project supervisor was located in another office and was very busy, so made it rather difficult to get the support I needed for my project at times. However, this taught me to work independently and trust my own scientific instinct, so potentially taught me more skills for the future.
A lot of training courses, throughout the year. Was able to attend a conference and utilise online resources whenever I needed to learn more about a specific area.

I would love to return to this job, but unfortunately R&D aren't hiring in the area that I want to work within and don't operate a graduate scheme.
The Culture
Very good social scene with fellow placement students, with regular parties, nights out in London, pub quizzes, meals out or just a drink at the social club after work.
Considering it was within the London commuter belt I was happy with what I got for my money, that said, it was expensive!
I worked in a small town, so no real night life to speak of. A lot of nice pubs, but a trip further a field was needed for nights out.
A huge array of activities were put on whether it be something sporting or a charity event.
