The Role
The work was challenging but gave me a great insight into pharmaceuticals and research.
Over time as my skills and confidence developed I felt more and more valued by others in the department, I felt as though my work was useful and necessary for the department and company.
I had two supervisors who gave me lots of support both in and out of the lab, I also had a line manager who I met with regularly for support.
My work varied in the year due to deadlines so sometimes I was busier than others.
I had a lot of responsibility over my year on placement, gradually increasing as my skills and confidence increased.
I had a great insight into the work involved in research, pharmaceuticals and even working life! It gave me the confidence to consider applying for PhDs in the future.
The Company
My office had about 20 people in and so was quite lively but never too loud as people were often in meetings or in the lab, in there was 5 other students so I felt right at home.
My department have a lot of experience in having students and so a training week is set up so you can learn basic lab skills as a group before you go off with your supervisors.
We received a lot of training and guidance with our University reports and projects which taught me a lot about scientific writing, a skill which will be greatly beneficial in my final year at University.

GSK provide good company benefits for full time employees and research there is great due to their large amount of funding.
The Culture
We had various parties throughout the year along with the occasional pub lunch !
Stevenage is a fairly cheap area to live in and close to London for shopping trips and good access to train lines
Stevenage did not have a very large selection of clubs/bars but you learn to love them ,there are also quite a lot of pubs about.
We did volunteering as a group which was great, as well as a fantastic team building opportunity.
