The Role
I really enjoyed my time at Santander. It has provided me with experience into the workings of a major player in the banking industry - very insightful.
My colleagues were all very helpful and friendly. They always seemed approachable and worked well as a unit.
I had regular review sessions with my 'buddy' which was good for reflection and discussing my progress. I worked closely with a number of people and they were always willing to help.
Being in a dynamic and fast-paced sector I always had work to do. For example, I had to monitor competitor activity which happened on a daily basis - this kept me busy. In addition, there was always something to learn which meant my time was used productively.
From a BAU standpoint, I was given the responsibility of analysing and reporting competitor changes in the market which was important when re-structuring pricing. Aside of that, I supported other colleagues with more 'marketing' based projects to improve customer service, and was given an individual project which was very interesting to work on.
I will be studying a unit on marketing in my final year, and so this internship will help when learning about different theoretical models. It has also enhanced my interpersonal and networking skills which will serve me well beyond my studies.
The Company
There was a relaxed and fun atmosphere in the office which I really liked. My colleagues were all sociable, outgoing, and always up for taking part in activities.
Once my internship started it was very organised. Prior to that however, there was a lack of communication from HR which made the recruitment process quite long.
There was an intern networking event during the first few weeks which gave me an insight into the graduate scheme, albeit the information/sessions on personal development was a bit general.
The Graduate Programme looks very interesting and is a great opportunity. Beyond that, the STEP and Mundo schemes also appeal to me.
The Culture
Yes, some of us often met for lunch in the canteen.
Reasonably priced.
Many local restaurants/bars.
Yes, there were a lot of socials events like a quiz night, 80s disco etc.
