The Role
Extremely enjoyable! Gave a real understanding of what it is really like to work for a cutting edge leader in aerospace engineering. Everyone was extremely friendly and willing to help if I had any questions! I've come away with a much better understanding of the roles available at Rolls-Royce.
Given the opportunity to give weekly presentations on my work to the whole team and discuss my findings. I was sent on business trips around the UK and worked closely with leading UK universities. The reports I produced were taken seriously by the team and many suggested changes were implemented!
My manager was extremely friendly and willing to give advice if I didn't understand sometime or wasn't familiar with a particular topic area. Organised regular progress meetings and invited myself and the rest of the team to post work meals/drinks.
Being an intern there will always be patches where there is less to do and then times where the workload is really high. However, during my placement I had a couple of major projects that lasted 3/4 weeks and a couple of minor projects on top that lasted 2/3 days.
I was trusted to give weekly presentations to universities and external companies on the team's work and potential changes to our project. I was trusted in suggesting and implementing realistic changes to the project.

The Company
Very friendly environment, however being the summer there were some weeks with distinctly less people than others. However on the whole is was a very professional environment to work in and resources had clearly been spent to aid employee wellness.
Very well organised. Clear instruction and communication from HR and manager/team was confirmed 6 weeks prior to internship. University halls were set up as accommodation 2/3 months prior to the internship providing an environment where all the interns could get to know each other well! Induction day was well organised, giving an ideal time to sort out last minute paperwork and get introduced to the company.
There were plenty of opportunities to have technical training (CAD/FEA/CFD etc.) as well as well as organised tours around the facilities.

Rolls Royce is a world leader in aerospace technology and there are opportunities within engineering, manufacturing, materials, customer relations and finance. All interns are either considered for future placements or the official graduate scheme depending on their year of graduation and references.
The Culture
University halls (where most of the interns lived) was a perfect place to get to know other students in the same position. It fondly reminded me of being a First Year again, with the excitement that comes with moving into university halls (I am now going into Fourth Year). Regularly nights out in Derby/Nottingham were organised on Friday/Saturday nights and there was the opportunity to play football/basketball every other evening with other interns.
I am a student from London so anything within 25 miles of Westminster seems cheap. There were plenty of large supermarkets within a 10 minute walk of the Halls and the Halls themselves were relatively cheap. Most interns made packed lunches, however the abundance of canteens on site provided lunch for under £5. Derby has a Westfields shopping mall and a sizeable town centre giving everything you need from Nandos to Showcase Cinemas.
Despite what I had been previously told the night life was actually pretty good, and cheap! Plenty of bars/pubs within walking distance of the halls and a large collection of clubs (Scream/Lola Lo/Revolution/Mosh plus many more). It wasn't exactly Central London, but with 200 interns from halls a good night was always possible! A cheap nightbus to Nottingham was always available for those who fancied an adventure.
As previously mentioned living in halls provided plenty of opportunities. Rolls Royce itself also has a well equipped gym that contained a weight room, fitness studio, squash/tennis courts and football/rugby pitches.
