The Role
I enjoyed the whole experience more than I thought I would - it really surprised me quite a lot. The first week of the internship really helped set the tone of the coming weeks and luckily I liked it.
This was one of the highlights of the internship. To have team members that listen to me and that are really helpful, accelerated my learning quite a lot. So to answer the question - I feel very valued by my colleagues.
I was given all of the support that I need and everything that I needed was always at hand. I could ask my manager for anything at any time and he would be available to help me.
The work started off a bit slow but it gradually increased to a level that I was actually very happy with. This gradual increase is definitely in my favour as it helped me to master my skills before moving onto something more difficult.
I was given quite a bit of responsibility during the internship. This didn't surprise me as I know a few other people who have done this internship. It's one of the reasons that I applied in the first place - the fact that my friends recommended it.
So many - if not all - of the skills that I have gained during this experience will be used in the future. Even when I return to the company and of course for the rest of my degree.
The Company
This was actually something that I didn't put much thought to. I guess it's what I expected of the office. Lots of computers and lots of desks. The open plan layout of the office was a little distracting sometimes as people would be chatting around me but apart from this, it was generally quite a good atmosphere.
A lot of the internship was organised pretty well but there were some times that I felt there could have been a bit more direction and planning. Overall - not bad.
They gave us a lot of training at the start of the internship to prepare us to what was to come. Unfortunately, a lot of this training was not actually relevant to the job that I was doing. This was a point of frustration undoubtedly.
Company Parties/Events
They offered me a job at the company!
The Culture
Very good social scene. A few of my friends were also working as interns in the company so we would go out quite frequently after work to go for drinks or go for dinner. I also went out with some of the interns that I met over the week for lunch occasionally.
Not cheap. This was something else that I didn't particularly like about the internship.
The nightlife in my area was very lively. I visited a nearby club to cool off a bit after work and met up with some of my colleagues there - this was quite a lot of fun I have to say.
Yes, there was a noticeboard at the company that advertised various types of activities. Things like football and basketball tournaments as well as a nearby gym - great for something to do at the weekends.
