    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have overall thouroughly enjoyed my placement. The best decision i made was initially to do a placement rather than going into my third year of university. I feel that the skills i have learnt can not be taught in a lecture theatre. There are times when it has been a challenge both emotionally and in terms of my skills but to overcome such challenges is very rewarding. I now have a much clearer idea of my career path and have become genuinely enthusiastic about both the industry and function that i work in

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • At the beginning of my placement i was obviously a lot less experienced and had fewer skills than i do now. I dont feel that i was seen as low value by my colleagues when i started but everybody was patient and understanding that this was my first real taste of a full time job. This was definitley a good thing and everybody was friendly and polite in welcoming me to the business. As my placement has progressed i have developed into my role meaning that i was more able to provide a service to an increasing amount of people within the business. I have defintitly notice that people have begun to value my work whether through praise from colleagues and by being given more responsibilty

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The team that i had around me are in my case were very experienced and always provided support and guidance when needed. They provided support in a way that allowed me to have a go at things myself without being too sheltered but at the same time were always there so it encouraged me to be proactive and develop.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The automotive industry itself is generally fast paced and continuously changing and improving. The plant that i worked in ran 24/7 during the week so naturally i was quite busy on a daily basis. This was quite overwhelming at first but once i set out a daily routine this became managable to a healthy level.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I would say by the end of my placement i was given a large amount of responsibility. Working in HR one of my regular tasks involved inputting employees working hours which is directly related to their pay. It is critical that this is as accurate as possible at all times. I was also assigned some projects that i was to pilot by myself. It was good to have responsibilty like this as it meant i felt trusted and capable of performing at this level. However i also had to remember that i was accountable for everything i did.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As previously mentioned, the skills that i have developed i feel could not have been learnt anywhere other than the work place. Also, i think they will really help me going into my final year of university (e.g. organisation, time management, accuracy) and beyond (People skills, punctuality).

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot in terms of internal training for my job role and for the systems in place in the plant. I also received Fire Marshall training, so there were some opportunities for extra things like that. The company a very keen on students returning once they have finished their studies. The scheme that they offer for recent graduates offers great opportunities for international work which could then put you in a great position to stay with the company in the UK after this. The support that the UK HR team and also contacts within international plants provide for people interested in this opportunity is extremely helpful.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes Initial induction to the company involved an induction weekend at a conference centre that involved training and introduction to the company and put me in contact with all the other students in the UK.
