The Role
I really enjoyed my time with Costain, I was able to develop skills I gained at university and adapt to the working environment. I worked with a really good group of people who were always willing to give me a hand and help me learn.
Very valued, I was given work to do that was going to be used and presented to the client. My opinion was always valued in meetings as well.
I was given as much support as required by the different members of the team. If i was ever stuck or unsure as to how to do something, support was always available to me.
At the start of the placement I wasn't too busy as the department was between projects, the members of the office team tried to find work for me to do that would be relevant which I really appreciated. As the department started on the new project my work load became bigger and I was very busy on a daily basis.
As my placement progressed I was given more responsibility as I became a more trusted member of the team. Towards the end of the placement I was dealing directly with the client on some occasions and had my own pieces of work to complete that were to be presented to the client.
Throughout my placement I was able to use the skills I have gained whilst at university, the placement allowed me to develop these skills and they will definitely become useful going into my 4th and final year. I found the experience I had the opportunities I was given will benefit me more in my future career.
The Company
The office atmosphere was really good, it was a hard working office but we all got on very well and enjoyed a laugh.
The placement was very well organised, the graduate recruitment team kept in touch with me throughout the placement and there were specific tasks to complete during the placement.
I had to complete the Costain innovation tasks throughout the placement which helped me develop. I also attended a Network Rail learning event which was extremely useful in helping me understand the railway infrastructure.
National Travel
Very appealing, I would very much like to return to Costain to complete their graduate programme.
The Culture
I was the only student in the office and most people commuted into the office so there weren't many opportunities. I played 5 a side football with people from the office and other Costain offices around Wales which was good fun.
Very cheap, I moved to Cardiff for the placement and the cost of living was very low. Costain also helped me out with paying for my accommodation.
The nightlife in Cardiff is excellent, there are plenty of pubs and clubs and it gets really busy at the weekend.
There wasn't really many, as I mentioned before I played 5 a side football with some people in the office.
