The Role
I found the marketing side of my job very interesting and rewarding as I loved gauging consumer reaction to the new products and the campaigns that accompanied them. However I can't say that I enjoyed doing the admin work as I found it restrictive and quite dull. Luckily, most of my day was spent in the marketing department.
I truly felt like a part of the family - couldn't have asked for better work colleagues. They were so kind and friendly that I felt like I'd been working with them for years.
I met with the management once in a week during the team meetings, other than that I was mainly left to my own devices. If I needed their advice, though, I had no qualms about approaching them - they were both extremely helpful and very professional.
It differed day-to-day, but I did find that I was always busier at the start of the week and then it quietened down towards the weekend. I usually was asked to do the admin work during the less busy times, which made them even more boresome.
On the marketing side, I couldn't have asked for anything more. It truly was perfect. I was doing the job I want to do for my career - I was heavily involved in marketing campaigns and budget decisions. I was given a huge amount of responsibility and I thrived under it.
The work experience has been indispensable. Thanks to my time at the company, my work in my final year has increased substantially in both quality and confidence. I feel like I deserve to be a final year marketing student and that I'm ready to step into the industry once I graduate.
The Company
A really happy place to be, especially around the holiday period. At Christmas time, we decorated the office and played festive music. To be fair, though, everyone was in good spirits all year through as there was no reason to be grumpy or unhappy - unless you were stuck doing the admin work permanently.
I was offered the placement very quickly with little hassle. The management were very keen to make sure I had a progressive year and, as a result, the placement year was very well planned.
They were very keen to challenge me and make sure that the placement was worthwhile. Therefore they invested quite a lot in me. I shadowed a high-up colleague for a week to give me an idea of what was expected of me and I was heavily involved in the team meetings.

If I was offered a job I would take it immediately - as long as it was mainly involved with the marketing department. However they don't have a graduate scheme so the chances of future employment are unlikely.
The Culture
I went to lunch with a few colleagues each day. We are still in touch and see each other quite regularly.
Generally, it isn't the cheapest place to live but as long as you know the right places to go you can have quite a good social life. I went out every weekend and even indulged in a few social activities during the week.
There's a great nightlife for students. It's very accomodating and modern. Plus it's also very safe - after every night out I walked a mile back to my accomodation, as I refuse to queue for hours and pay extortinate amounts of money on taxis, and I never met with any trouble.
If you made friends with colleagues there were lots of opportunities to meet up outside of work. I had a great social life and enjoyed every minute of my placement, social-wise.
