The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the placement. Quite often I actually couldn't wait to get into the work in the morning
I was treated like a graduate even though I was doing a 6 month placement. Sometimes my colleagues even forgot I was a placement student. As such I did not feel undervalued as I was a placement student
My supervisor helped me whenever I asked. I mostly tried to solve a problem myself, but help was always there if I needed it.
I was never bored and days went very quickly. When I had to demo my work to customers it was quite stressful and manic, but very exciting!
I was solely responsible for my project (which was to create an Android application). I could design the app in any way that I liked.
Before starting the placement I had no experience in Java, however I would like to think I am quite competent using Java. As Java is object-oriented, this will be very useful in the future as professional coding normally involves object oriented programming.
The Company
Very friendly, making jokes and having a laugh some of the time, but most of the time it is quiet while people are working.
I had a desk waiting for me when I joined.
As part of the graduate scheme, there are various lunchtime teaching courses which were very interesting. There is also a web portal with hundreds of training courses. If you want training, you have to be pro-active and look for it yourself, but there are plenty of resources there.

My managers said they would love to have be back as a graduate, just need to get the official offer from HR now. If I do get the offer, I won't hesitate to accept it, I had a great time!
The Culture
There were social events for the graduates and vacation students. There was a boat party in the week that all the vacation students finished.
I lived with my parents and had a 1hr30min commute, so I did not have to pay the rent of living in Guildford. Guildford can be quite expensive (not far off London)
Guildford is a student town due to the University of Surrey being located there, so there is plenty of opportunity for nightlife. Colleagues from work didn't really go out clubbing but there are nightclubs and pubs around.
There were quite a lot of social events arranged by people in my team and by the company. E.g. there was a company-arranged crazy golf night.
