The Role
Loved the people, the place, and the work in itself was challenging, there just wasn't enough to keep me busy for the full eight weeks, though this seemed to be particular to my project.
Brilliant people to work with, both full-time staff and other interns. Very welcoming, fun, and all very close which is quite rare and seems to have something to do with there being little inter-institution competitiveness which makes it a really great atmosphere.
Again, the people at the Bank are really on top of everything, and great to work with and there is strong communication and structure so I always felt clued in on what I was meant to be doing, and that someone was always ready to offer advice and support.
How busy you were depended on the project in question, and unfortunately for my particular one the placement was a bit too long for the work I was given.
They are really good at giving you something that they actually need done, and that will be useful to the Bank, as well as letting you be quite independent in getting on with it, which is a substantial level of responsibility.
In terms of future jobs/work, very useful, though not academically as my discipline is outside finance/economics.
The Company
They work hard so it's not all jokes 24/7 but there's always some sort of random conversation going on every 10 minutes, emails being sent with inside jokes that they were quick to include me on, and so any time there was a lull in work that was a relief.
Quite a lot left up to the individual manager so it would have depended, but mine was very organised so for me it was good.
A lot of time and energy focused on giving me the knowledge i needed to do my project quickly.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
These seem to be better for non-economists than economists, though not necessarily in monetary terms.
The Culture
They organised really good events for the interns, but also because everyone was fun and quite like-minded we arranged some between ourselves. It was also easy to get involved with full-time colleagues and what they were up to.
The City is not cheap.
Good if you wanted to network and were prepared to pay for the pleasure.
More so if you were a full-time worker but a couple of interns joined on the sports teams that needed extra members.
