About You
There were periods where I didn't have a lot to do but I really enjoyed attending meetings and learnt a lot whilst I was there.
The team that I worked with/shadowed were really friendly and really made the experience.
There was always someone to help if I had any questions about the work I was doing.
Although I don't feel like I developed any skills the information I received about the line of work and tax legislation will be very useful if I choose to pursue a career in that area. I don't like like it will assist me at all in my degree studies though.
The Company
There was not a whole lot of structure to the insight but that is mostly due to the nature of the insight (it involved shadowing a female director for a week). So other than following her calendar there was not a whole lot of structure.
The office atmosphere was really good. Everyone in the office was really nice, funny and relaxed. It definetly made the experience that bit more enjoyable. In a way I was pleasantly surprised as I didn't think it would be so relaxed and open.
The insight was only a week long so I couldn't say that the firm invested a whole lot in me. Although I did learn a lot of things which will be useful when I return to the firm next Summer for an internship and I think that was on their mind whilst I was there.
I got to shadow a lot of different people so seeing what an associate does all the way up to a director I got a real sense of what it would like to be at the firm in the long term. I really got a feel for what the office environment was like and what sort of social activities they have outside of work. Having an insight into the graduate induction was also very useful.
I came into the insight week knowing/hearing what other peoples experiences were and that the firm was perhaps not as relaxed or has welcoming as some other competing firms. I kept an open view though and I'm glad I did because I found that the particular office I was at was nothing like what I had heard from other peoples experiences. Although, I don't know if this speaks for the firm culture as a whole.
I was unsure of what this particular line of service entailed and have been considering it alongside other lines of service. Although I am still not 100% certain, it has made me consider this line of service more seriously.
Everything Else
I was paid more than adequately for the experience. I did not incur any expenses although there was the option to be reimbursed if I did.
As well as being able to shadow many people in my line of service I got to meet other employees from different lines of service from attending meetings and being introduced to them when having a tour of the office.
There was a social event at the end of the week for the interns leaving. Unfortunately I was unable to attend so cannot comment on this further.
Yes. I got to attend an induction talk for the incoming graduates. During that talk they talked about activities outside work include the corporate decathlon.
Yes, especially if you are unsure about working for the firm or in that particular line of service. Although it is only a week long it does give you a good initial insight into the firm and the line of service you have chosen.
