The Role
Although there were days which were difficult the overall experience was invaluable and I gained so many skills and a lot of confidence from the year.
I was in a small group within a big department and they were all really welcoming and treated me like a member of the team.
I was given enough support and guidance without being told what to do all the time, which really allowed me to develop my project where I wanted it to go, as well as learn from my mistakes!
It really varied day to day, but whenever there were slow days I was able to catch up on reading for my project or to work in different departments to widen my experience.
My project was my own project so I felt responsible for that. I was also able to take other opportunities of responsibility on my placement, such as volunteering for charity events and looking after work experience students.
My experience of working in a real company has prepared me for a working environment after uni, such as improving my confidence and presentation skills as well as time keeping and experimental design. The lab skills I have developed will help me a lot in my final year project.
The Company
My office was very friendly and everyone worked well together.
Very well organised - the first 2 weeks were mostly lab courses starting with basic skills getting more complex as the training went on and also lots of information on how the company worked on different levels.
Lots! I was learning new skills throughout the whole year from lots of different people. I also attended lots of lectures and courses on different topics, such as scientific writing and presentation skills, which were invaluable.

Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I would consider working with the company again after doing a PhD.
The Culture
My department had about 16 students in it so there was quite a good social scene. My office also went for lots of pub lunches and dinners.
Quite expensive
Not bad, only one very bad club but lots of nice pubs and really easy to get into London.
Loads to do around the town and really easy to get into London to do stuff after work.
