The Role
BAE put me on a team of highly experienced and friendly engineers that gave me all the help I may have needed to complete the projects I was set whilst at the same time allowing me independence to get a taste of what it's like to be an engineer.
The people working on the PMS system for the Astute class of submarine are extremely busy. The projects I was set was off loading some of their monumental work load which I think was appreciated across the board.
I could walk over to anyone's desk and ask for technical manuals (which they promptly fished out of the rats nest that is the electronic document management system), pictures or even access to the hardware that I was working on.
It wouldn't have been fun if I wasn't busy.
I was not working on critical systems but was still allowed to have a lot of independence e.g. calling suppliers and getting quotes etc...
This internship has given me an idea of what an engineer does and an overall big picture of the engineering profession. I have liked what I've seen so far and have decided to fully pursue a career in Electrical Engineering.
The Company
The team I was put on were a friendly and welcoming group of people. I had no trouble fitting in.
There is still an issue with my security clearance that denied me access to some bits of work that are marked higher than restricted but that is a problem with Defence Business Services trying to sort out my National Security Vetting.
There was not much training and development, this internship was more about working independently and getting a feel of being an actual engineer.

BAE Systems - Maritime Submarines appears to be a great place to develop as an engineer and work towards a chartership. The three months I have spent here have given me the next goal to aim toward.
The Culture
There are plenty of clubs e.g. football or MMA that one can join.
Barrow is a cheap town to live in.
There is a karaoke bar here. Job Done!
Barrow-in-Furness is 5 minutes from the Lake district. There is an infinite amount of activities to do outside work.
