The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at BAE Systems. It was a great opportunity to see how my degree could be used once I graduate.
While the project I was working on was not the most important my colleague made me feel like the work I was doing was useful to them. I also got on very well with everyone and felt like part of the team.
Mostly, I was left to work on my own. However, help was always available when I asked,
I always had work to do each day. Some days were slower than others but the was mostly due to gaps in knowledge of the project.
While I wasn't given important tasks to deal with I felt I was given the responsibility to motivate myself . I was not given deadlines or specific end points but rather I was just completing as much work as possible in the time given.
I learned and improved upon several skills that are extremely useful to my degree and I feel that completing this internship is one of the best things I have done to help me with university.
The Company
The office could be quite quiet when everyone was working hard but often everyone would come together for a special occasion which was always enjoyable. There was also a good rapport between all the students in the department which made the time at work so much more enjoyable.
The communication between the different bodies dealing with my internship seemed to be slightly lacking. From being offered the placement in March, it was only fully confirmed a few weeks before i started in July. This meant that the initial stages were stressful as I didn't know what was going on.
There was no real training provided for the position that I was in as it wasn't necessary.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I would definitely want to work within the same section of BAE Systems after I graduate and will be looking out for jobs with them.
The Culture
There was an extremely good social aspect as many of the students were quite outgoing and would organise nights out. The department I worked in would also have social events so I was always busy.
Compared to home Bristol felt expensive but I think it was about average and wasn't ever taken into consideration when planning events.
The nightlife in Bristol was great. There was always a great atmosphere.
Personally, I took part in activities that I normally do at university which meant finding places that offered them. This was very easy to do.
