About You
I enjoyed the insight greatly as it let me understand more about my chosen career path through various talks and activities throughout the day.
I felt very valued as I was able to ask questions freely about anything I was unsure on. I also networked with employees and they answered any questions I had about the daily life of a working Actuary.
During the insight day I gained a fair bit of guidance as we were given tips on applying for internships as well as how to answer the tough interview questions.
The insight helped me greatly in searching for both graduate jobs and internships at the main Actuarial firms and I have been able to apply the insight day tips to the applications and some interviews that I have attended.
The Company
The insight day was extremely well structured. It began with a brief introduction by the person running the insight day, we were then able to have some tea/coffee and talk to the other people attending the insight day. Next we were given various talks by the Towers Watson employees and they explained to us about what their work entailed as well as the perks of being a trainee actuary at Towers Watson. Then a software engineer arrived to explain to us about creating different types of software for the Actuaries to use. The day ended with a skills session where we were given application and interview tips.
The atmosphere was great as the people that attended were all doing mathematical/economics degrees so we all had things in common.
We had a long skills session where the supervisor was walking around and personally asked each person interview style questions and then gave tips on improving our answers (e.g. staring at people directly in the eye and having a firm handshake with the interviewer).
In regards to this question I was given a talk by a current Towers Watson Actuarial employee and he explained to me about that he did daily from getting his job as a graduate to passing each of his exams and gaining the actuarial title.
I learnt a lot about the culture of the company culture from how the employees at Towers Watson addressed me and the other people attending the insight day to how the employees communicated with each other.
I found the day an invaluable experience as it has heightened my dream of becoming an Actuary and it has made me more determined to do well in my studies to one gain employment-ship at a prestigious such as Towers Watson.
Everything Else
I was not paid or reimbursed expenses as I came to the event locally.
Yes there was time during the lunch break to network with the other employees and ask them about the actuarial career path and if the enjoyed working at Towers Watson.
The networking opportunities were great as we were told that Towers Watson regularly attends various universities around the country to hold talks with the large student bodies.
Yes the employees said that they often played sports after work and on the weekends and even had a Towers Watson football team. They also said that they attended the pub after work sometimes which I think is great socially as it gives time to get to know the other employees.
Yes I would recommend the insight day to a friend as it is something that I found extremely useful.
