The Role
I very much enjoyed every aspect.
I felt very valued. I was not given any of the traditional 'intern' tasks but was instead treated exactly how a new graduate would be. I felt an integral part of the team from my first day and felt as though my work mattered.
I was given a personal mentor and a buddy who constantly supported me. I had regular feedback and catch-ups during the internship and always felt supported.
I was always busy. I liked this, as I felt I was learning a lot and it made my time spent feel worthwhile. If I did have any time spare I always had tasks to do such as completing compliance tasks.
I was given a good amount of responsibility. I was able to take charge in my task by asking lots of questions and going in with an enthusiastic time. At the same time, I felt I was always supported in case the responsibility became too much.
I learnt the importance of networking skills which I believe will help me not just with my degree but throughout my career. I also learnt how to use Excel which will be very important and useful throughout my career as well.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very positive. People seemed to be enjoying the job they were doing. There was a good balance between hard work but also friendly office chat. There was not a feeling of hierarchy that you get in some offices. Everyone was approachable and there was communication between all levels.
The placement overall was brilliantly organised. I had a very good training period at the beginning where it became clear what was expected from me and throughout the placement I knew what I was meant to be doing and what the final goals were.
The firm greatly invested in me. I had a training period offsite that was all paid for. I was given my own laptop to use. But most importantly they invested their time in me. There was always someone available there to explain things to me. In the end I was offered a job so it was clear that they had definitely invested in me and come to the conclusion that I suited to the job.
The organisation is a very appealing organisation to work for. It is very well respected in the industry and definitely invests in it's staff. I see it as a great company that I aspire to work at.
The Culture
Yes, during the training period we got to know the other placement students well and we kept in contact throughout the placement both through the office communicator and through social events. There was also a good social scene with colleagues already at the firm, we had a staff meal and team breakfasts!
The cost of living was quite high as it was in central London but then you are financially rewarded accordingly. The company paid any extra expenses occurred so getting to work was no more expensive than it would have been elsewhere. Socialising was expensive but I did not have too much extra time to go to restaurants etc.
The nightlife was very good, from much more chilled bars to international nightclubs there was definitely something for everyones taste. Y
Yes there were. I regularly met up with other placement students out of work at bars. There was also time to catch up with my friends not at work and I was never expected to work at the weekend.
