The Role
The company treated the interns well, with regular events to get them to socialize. The work was challenging but my team was cooperative and friendly
I was very inexperienced in the type of work I was given to do and I feel like they could have easily done the work much faster but it was a learning experience. Help was always available and they were very social though
My manager was always around for help and support if needed. Regular meetings meant we always kept up to date with what was happening and what needed doing
There was a lot of work to do and rarely a time where I felt like I had nothing to do, and I was allowed to work at my own pace
I was completely responsible for the project that I was working on and the sole contributor of code, as well as collaborating with another intern on his project that partially linked with mine
I was working on a lot of low-level code, much more than my previous placement at ARM, and I think I will be going into much higher level programming in my future. The skills and knowledge of the hardware should help with writing optimal high level code in the future though
The Company
A lot of people working hard and not a huge amount of discussions but everyone was still very friendly and when it came to being social it loosened up a lot
Not much had been organised in terms of me getting the hardware to work on but they found me things to do while they sorted that out. The placement itself was well organised and I always knew where I should be/what I should be doing
There was a lot of training available but mainly in departments that weren't relevant to my work, I was largely left to pick up things on my own in terms of learning the API that I had to use. Knowledge of the hardware was given to me though
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Future internships are something I will definitely consider although I think I prefer working on much higher-level projects, particularly artificial intelligence and algorithmics over low-level programming.
The Culture
Social events with other interns were quite regular and we had good access to social areas. A team building day with outdoor activities was organised for my department which was really good. Meet-ups with other departments could have been more regular
I have lived in Cambridge all of my life (bar university) and it's always been reasonable for socializing. Living with parents during the internship meant I didn't have to pay rent here so I can't comment on that
The nightlife isn't spectacular in Cambridge but I'm comparing it a lot to uni life when student events are a regular thing.
Loads of stuff was organised, from pub meet-ups to board games to video games to sports. I couldn't list a tenth of the things that were going on off the top of my head
