The Role
The placement overall was really enjoyable and gave a really good insight into the different areas of the business with really varied tasks.
The staff were all really friendly and welcoming. They were all willing to answer any questions no matter how silly the questions may have seemed & no one made you feel like you were disrupting them/being a nuisance.
The support was great, you could ask anyone in the office if you were stuck and everyone would be willing to help, not just the managers you were assigned to.
Throughout the 6 weeks I was kept busy all the time. The staff made a real effort to find interesting tasks for me to be getting on with. On the rare occasion that I didn't have work to do I could get on with preparing for one of the presentations we had been set.
I was giving quite a bit of responsibility but of course you would have managers checking over your work before it was finalised so it didn't matter if you got things wrong.
I think my time at Deloitte is going to be useful to me going into my last year of uni. I was in the audit department for the duration of my time which will probably help with my upcoming audit module at uni and the experience in general should be helpful as the knowledge I gained was all related at least in part to my studies of accounting & finance.
The Company
There was a good atmosphere in the office, although everyones really busy getting on with their work there's always time for you to have a quick chat about what people think of the job/to get any advice about the job. Deloitte take on a lot of new starters each year so there's quite a good group of young people who are easy to approach.
The internship was really well organised. There was 1 week of introductions to different departments, team building activities, training etc before going into the actual work placement which was nice. Then during the remaining 5 weeks there were more training sessions. People were aware they were going to be allocated summer students so most would have tasks planned out in advance ready to keep you busy.
We were given a lot of training sessions to prepare us for the placement and to get us more familiar with the company. In the first week we were also sent on a 2 day introduction to bookkeeping course which was great.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Future employment prospects are really appealing. During the 6 weeks they explain the different options available, which departments you can join, which qualifications they can help you get. At the end of the internship you are given the chance to do a partner interview and if successful at this interview you can then go back to uni with a full time graduate job offer!
The Culture
There was a really good social scene, from the first weekend people in the office already invited the summer students to go out with them which was good and from then onwards people would often go out together. The company themselves also organised social events such as dinners, pool nights, etc which were a good way to get to know people outside of the office environment.
Jersey isn't the cheapest place to live/socialise but in relation to the salaries it is generally affordable.
The nightlife in Jersey is a bit hit and miss, sometimes it's great sometimes it's not. Can't really compare it to nights out in the UK but as long as you're with a good group of people you're normally going to have a good night no matter where you go!
There were opportunities for the girls to go to the horse racing for ladies day, for the guys there was 5 a side football, there were various other sports to get involved in too.
