The Role
I have enjoyed my time at Prospectsoft immensely and managed to gain skills and knowledge that I am sure will serve me well in my last year of university as well as my future career. The work was very hands-on and practical with plenty of customer interaction and one of the best things about it was meeting and working alongside my colleagues.
There aren't enough words to say how helpful and friendly everyone there was and how crucial their input was during not only the beginning of my placement year, but also later on as the complexity of the projects increased. I knew I could always ask any of them for advice if I needed to and there were several occasions when they needed my input and I was happy to help. Everyone feels like part of a big family and they certainly made me feel the same way too.
Everyone in the company, including my supervisors and managers were very helpful and supporting during my time there, as well as open to suggestions and interested in my input and opinions as someone who had recently joined the company. My manager, Jonathan Brewer, and my supervisor, Rob White, were incredibly nice and helpful and I don't think I could have had anyone better to give me the guidance I needed.
There was quite a bit of work to be done, so no time to get bored. The best thing about it, tough, was that the work I was given was so varied that it helped me get a taste of everything that was going on from a technical point of view. Also, everyone was careful to give me enough time for each task when scheduling them in, instead of throwing everything at me at once, which was extremely useful.
I was given small bits of work right after my training finished, which helped me ease into the role and come to terms with that amount of responsibility. Of course, as the time went by, the size and importance of the projects increased and I was trusted to do my very best to ensure the work met our customers' needs and high standards.
I strongly believe that the time spent there will be essential for my future career as it helped me improve my technical skills as well as my 'soft skills' a lot. I learned about what a working environment is like and how to interact with my colleagues and our customers, as well as how to better manage my time and analyse more complex software.
The Company
The office was always buzzing and everyone was incredibly friendly and happy to help and I believe that makes a huge difference in any workplace.
Everything from the month of training to the last day of placement was very well set up and adjusted to fit my strengths and improve my skills.
There was plenty of training at the beginning of the placement to familiarise us with the company, people and our products and there were still a lot more to learn afterwards. There is also an informal 'training' session every month to give everyone a chance to learn about new and exciting things that are happening within the company or outside of it.
Company Parties/Events
I have already been offered a job and was very pleased to take it as soon as my final year at university is over.
The Culture
Absolutely, everyone was always up for drinks or dinner and we had plenty of birthdays and other occasions to celebrate and bring everyone together for a fun night out.
Living in Oxford is not always easily affordable, but it was definitely the right choice. We were able to find a nice place at a reasonable price, very close to some of the best places to go to in Oxford.
Oxford is great for going out to party and meeting new people.
There were a lot of things going on either with people from work or just around Oxford, Finding the time to get involved was a bit trickier, but everything was there for the taking.
