The Role
The internship was really good, much better than expected. I started with little knowledge of the industry and by the end I had enough exposure to not only my department but also other areas of the business to understand the wider impact of my project. I was also able to go to a few site visits onshore which enhanced the experience.
The working atmosphere is brilliant. Everyone is willing to help you and they want to see you succeed. I felt very valued as my project, like any you'll do at Shell, will have a significant impact on the business.
I was sitting right next to my mentor and supervisor which allowed me to be in daily contact with them. Help is given but because the internship is assessed, you are expected to self start and adapt quickly. You are in charge of your own project and the supervisor will point you in the right direction when required. Weekly meetings can be set-up for more formal support/feedback.
Working on my own project, I had to manage my time. The start was a bit slow but it is a really steep learning curve so it is important to take in as much as you can at the start to build a solid knowledge base. The later stages of the project were much busier with pressure building up to deliver from time to time. I always had enough work, at no time I was bored or just sitting there.
I was in charge of my own project. I was given a task and I had to deliver!
I strongly developed interpersonal skills. They are invaluable in not only a working environment but also a study environment. On top of that, I am much more confident speaking to senior engineers and greatly improved my analytical and problem solving skills.
The Company
The atmosphere is great. Everyone loves their job which makes you more enthusiastic and willing to perform well and deliver a good project. We also had some different type of food just about every day in P & T. Everyone is really friendly and willing to chat and help.
The internship is very well organised. This is mainly because of the assessment process, the internship is very structured. From the start you'll know what your deliverables are, you will create a project plan and work to that. Throughout the placement the people will be there to help you but you are very much in charge of your own project.
From the start I received presentations from professional engineers. I also attended lunch and learns where I learned about various aspects of Shell sometimes not directly related to my project. I went to site visits which greatly improved my understanding of equipment. Overall the company spent a good amount of time training and developing me,

The summer internship is assessed and very well structured. On your last day you will find out whether you have been successful and will get a graduate job or not. As long as you do well and show the right qualities (CAR related), you will do fine.
The Culture
We all lived together in student accommodation which created a very friendly atmosphere and good social scene. Interns were also invited to many graduate events such as a summer Ceilidh, Annual Shell Dance and sports events. Interns got on really well with each other.
Stayed in student accommodation which was ok, £110 pw. Food prices and most other costs are normal. I found the buses to be quite expensive. Social activities are normal prices too, nothing ridiculously high.
Nightlife was ok. During summer most students leave so some of the places were empty at times. As long as you are with fellow interns, you'll have a good time!
Lots of sports and other club activities organised by company graduates. There was something going on most week-ends.
