The Role
The internship was extremely enjoyable, with lots of events organised outside of work as well as during work. The work its self was interesting, and tasking, and involved working on solution for customer issues. The work you get is dependent on yourself and what you ask for.
The best bit about working for Rolls-Royce was the colleagues you worked with. The team were extremely helpful, and even though they were very busy they always found time to help me.
My line manager was extremely busy however, never hesitated to help me. Gave me many opportunities to develop and allowed me to take many training courses and encouraged self-development.
How busy you are depends on how much work you ask for. But on general basis, i was extremely busy, and did stay past normal working hours on a number of occasions.
I had to overlook the development of a fairly large project, and was trusted to solve engine build problems, so was given relatively a lot of responsibility and did not feel like an intern at all.
Its given me numerous skills, from problem solving, time management, managing large projects, and systems engineering.
The Company
Atmosphere was excellent, everyone had a good balance between work and the odd break , there was always time for the odd banter between colleagues.
This is the part that lets Roll-Royce placements down, although the placement was extremely useful and I learnt a lot you can't help feeling that the placement year isn't organised as well as it could be. It's as if the company place you with a line manager and hope they have work for you to do, and if there isn't you can ask to be moved.
The company invested a lot in me, went on approximately 8 training courses and all the skills i learnt were than used in the project i was working on.

Good graduate scheme, which looks really organised and offers lots of opportunities to move around the company. Only downside is if you carry out placement during third year, and have two years left (Meng) Rolls-Royce can't offer you a job as they calculate their headcount on a 1 year basis. So summer interns can get a job after 10 weeks, where contribution can be minimal, however year-long interns may not get any offers, apart from a summer internship for the following year, which in terms of cost seems wasteful.
The Culture
Social scene wasn't the best on the derby site. Most interns seem to want to stay in their own flats , and the apprentice and graduate association seemed as if it was only for the apprentices. However social scene within your own team was quite good.
One of the benefits of the derby site, is that living costs are minimal compared to most places around the U.K and Nottingham is only about a 20 min car journey from Derby.
Nightlife was ok. Wasn't the best in Derby, don't expect it to be like University. As Derby doesn't have a large number of students.
Lot's of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, although again this is dependent on your line manger and team.
