About You
I enjoyed my placement very much, there was a great balance between work life and social life which I was not expecting. My colleagues were all very welcoming and friendly, and that really helped me settle in and feel comfortable in the work place. The placement also organised socials for all the placement students which was great for networking and catching up!
I really did feel a valued member of the team, I was given opportunities to work on projects, and be a significant member of the team. My colleagues did not hesitate to put their trust in me to perform tasks, and complete work that they require of me.
I received a lot of guidance whilst on my placement. On the induction day graduates were there for us to put questions to. However, there was no Graduates within Construction Advisory Real Estate, it would have been helpful for there to be so that I could ask them questions that would be more relevant to me. During the placement, my work colleagues stressed that they are there to help, and that I should be asking as many questions as possible. It was also made clear who I could go to if I wanted extra support from a member of staff.
The skills I have noticed that I need to improve on are my ability to have the confidence to ask questions, and apply my knowledge. These weaknesses can be helped to become strengths with more time within the workplace.
The Company
The insight was mostly well structured, however I did feel that some of the work colleagues did not know of my arrival, and therefore had not planned work for me to do. This was mostly seen in the final two weeks of my placement with a different department, Despite this, the placement in general was very well structured, and things were planned very well.
The atmosphere was very friendly and indicated that Deloitte workplace is a very collaborative working environment, relying on each other as much as oneself. Outside of work, there was enough sociable activities that hep with team building and getting to know the people that I was working with.
The firm used the first day of placement as a training day for all members of this scheme, this was incredibly useful as we got to familiarise ourselves with technology and processes such as recording working time and cloud storage. Deloitte also have a number of training programes that can be completed during the placement to enhance the knowledge of the intern
The insight really helped me understand what a full time job would be like. From being able to meet demands set to working and collaborating with others.
If I learnt anything from the insight, it would be that the companyt creates an environment of work and social sides of life. This is something that I was surprised by, but also glad that they do have this balance.
The placement really helped me decided what I want for my future. Going into the placement I was not sure what area of Construction I wanted to go into, and whether Deloitte would be the company for me. However the day to day activities reassured me that Deloitte was perfect. It was also made clear to me that there is huge flexibility over what you end up doing there, and it is through this that I am confident that my future lies here. The placement also had the potential for a graduate position at the end of it, and that was a huge incentive to me
Everything Else
I was paid and reimbursed expenses. Expenses consisted of mainly travel, of which was not the normal commute to the place of work.
There were lots of opportunities for networking. With drinks with just the work colleagues as well as organised networking events for other interns on the same scheme.
The networking events were good, it was a great way to widen your peer network and also catch up with other people on the scheme!
Yes I did find out a lot. People I worked with did Sports for Deloitte as well as being involved in charities and fundraisers.
Yes I would definitely recommend this to a friend, if you aren't sure what to do then a month long placement is perfect to see where you fit. It also allows you to gain valuable experience, build a professional network, and with a potential graduate job after, make your future!
