The Role
I loved working at GSK, I was placed in a really supportive team who had a wide range of activities for me to be involved in, I was offered a coach by a team member which really helped with my development.
I felt valued by the majority of my colleagues over the course of the year, I always recieved lots of praise for my hard work.
I had weekly one to one catch-ups with my manager where I spoke to him about how busy I was vs how productive I was being, any issues that needed solving and the activities that I was being involved in, we also monitored where I was on a scale of 1-10 (1 being miserable and 10 being extremely happy with how things were going)
There were some days where I felt overloaded with work but I quickly learnt to manage my time and push back on some of what was being asked of me, I learnt to prioritise so I soon had a perfect balance.`
Towards the end of my placement, my final project involved me creating a 1 hour working lunch session which was to be implemented globally, i had piloted these sessions with functional leaders in the business and then handed this over to my replacement for her to see the global roll out through. I had full responsibility for many projects throughout the year.
I learnt more about myself, others, Human Resources and global business in my 1 year at GSK than my whole time at University, I was able to apply all the learning from my education into my job and now I will be able to apply everything I learnt at GSK into my final year of studies.
The Company
Friendly, supportive, hard working
SRG were great and offered support every step of the way. I think in the initial stages of me joining GSK my team could have been better inducted on what was expected of them during my placement year.
They invested highly in my development and I recieved some training, as I worked in Training and development on my placement I was quite close to a lot of courses on leadership, training skills, interpersonal skills and personality profiling so I believe that the investment was more subconcious.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I would like to find another organisation to work for so I can apply my learning at GSK to a new environment. I would consider going back in the future as I believe it is a great company to work for when you have a family and responsibilities.
The Culture
I was involved in IP Unite ( a team set up by placement students to organise activities to Unite the 300+ placement students around the country). The graduates also involved us in their activities, at work my team would all have lunch together and have team trips to the pub/ out for a meal occasionally after work. The company also invested in social parties for departments.
I had £45 a week disposable income Living in london was extremely difficult
I couldnt really afford to explore the nightlife where I lived but when I did go out it was expensive for entry and very intimidating for a girl as there was maily males out.
Gym and other physical activities, I started running whilst living there and took part in a few local runs. I lived with other girls from placement so me and another girl spent a lot of time together exploring the city and doing lots of activities.
