The Role
Very enjoyable. A good insight into the real world of working. Was able to expand my knowledge in areas of my choosing (such as excel, AutoCAD).
After a couple of weeks, I was trusted with more and more complex work. Towards the end, I was the only site engineer overlooking a section of the works.
Worked closely as part of a team, sharing ideas and working through problems together.
Unexpected delays to the works meant the majority of the work was in the office, but there was still alot to be done.
In the last couple of weeks I was given control over my own section of work on site. Felt very well respected and responsible for the work.
Learnt alot about how the company works, expanded my knowledge of several computer programs which will undoubtedly be useful in my future career.
The Company
Large office, but spacious and never too loud. Could happily approach anyone with a question. Good level of general chat amongst doing work also.
I was able to start early with no problems. This did however upset the schedule for doing the placement tasks set for me, and I was unable to do one or two of them.
No formal training, but the placement is seen as training in the role I would be expected to join the company in when I graduate.
Subsidised Canteen
National Travel
Very good, as my second placement with the company, hopefully very likely to be offered a graduate job with them. They also have a good scheme set up to help graduates become chartered.
The Culture
Was with another placement student, but never got to meet any of the other students. i think a round up session at the end of the placement would be good to meet some of the students again and see what they have been doing. A conference call was made doing a similar thing, but presentations in person are more interesting and enjoyable.
N/A. Company paid for travel to work every day, so I lived at my parental home and commuted each day.
N/A (see above).
Yes. A couple of Friday evening trips to the pub which I was unable to attend. Also, some of the guys played 5-a-side but as I commuted every day, I was unable to play.
