The Role
The work was sometimes very engaging and tricky. Other times it could be quite dull (though not as often), but I suppose the same is true for most jobs.
I felt welcomed by everyone and my contributions were appreciated.
The managers were often too busy to contact by email of phone, but were helpful when available. Supervisors ipso facto tend to work more closely with you and were very friendly and communicative and helpful.
When the work is busy it is very busy. Down time can be painfully dull. As an intern the work you are given depends on the work available in your department. Sometimes there is little 'important' work to do so you end up doing the odd menial job here and there.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility in my two 6-month projects. Deadlines were expected to be met.
Cannot comment yet as I haven't resumed my degree course yet but I imagine that they helped a lot.
The Company
Everyone is friendly and most often up for a chat whether its business related or not.
The work of the intern entirely depends on the work available in the department s/he ends up at, therefore the experience differs wildly. Generally speaking the intern is required to participate in some kind of introductory training before getting involved in any projects but this was not always the case.
I never felt the work I did was unequal to that done by full time employees. In my internship I received a lot of training before getting involved in any big project so I would say the company invested heavily in me and my work.

Rolls-Royce is a great company to work for.
The Culture
Yes, employees would often socialize outside of work and during work hours (coffee breaks).
Derby is a relatively cheap city to live in.
Derby has an appalling nightlife. Thankfully it's not to far from cities with much more to offer (Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham etc). Some employees resented the Derby nightlife so much they spent most weekends in London.
A few most of them sport related.
