The Role
I really enjoyed the internship because it gave me a thorough insight into what kind of work one does as an accountant and their role in the financial services industry. There were also lots of opportunities for networking with members of staff and my peers.
I felt that the work I produced was valued, and this was verified by written and verbal feedback that I received
I had a people manager, who met up with me regularly to check that I was meeting my objectives for the internship and the senior associates that I worked for always explained each task that I was assigned before expecting me to complete it.
I was mostly busy on a daily basis and I was given a fair amount of tasks to do every day. I had enough work to do until the end of the working day but not so much that I had to stay late in the evening. For one week of my internship I was working on an audit client that did not have much work for me to do, so I was able to work on the 'BBC One' project. This project was given to the interns to work on in groups with the aim of finding a way to help the BBC attract younger audiences.
I was not given much responsibility during my placement. I was only responsible for completing the tasks that I was assigned.
I developed many transferable skills such as team work, leadership and organisational skills as well as basic accounting skills, which have been useful for my role as the Treasurer of the Music Society at my university
The Company
The office atmosphere was not very personal because there were roughly 400 people on my floor. There is a hot desking system and people tend not to talk to colleagues sitting next to them unless they are working on the same client
The internship was well organised, however some interns commented that they were assigned to clients that did not have much work for them to do. I was not affected, but other interns complained that they were given verbal job offers but had still not receive anything in writing 2 months after the internship has ended
We had a 3 day induction at a hotel in the countryside to develop our basic accounting skills and we also had team work/ice breaker activities We also had development days every few weeks
Company Parties/Events
I was given a job offer
The Culture
London is an expensive city but I had the benefit of living at home during my internship
Numerous bars and restaurants near the office
There were a few department trips but no activities e.g. sports or volunteering
