The Role
I really enjoyed my internship as my colleagues were very welcoming and friendly and helped me feel at ease straight away. The only downfall would have been that there was not enough for me to do and sometimes felt at a loose end, even after asking others for any work I could do.
I definitely felt very valued by my colleagues and felt that the work I was doing for them was really helping them. I felt very much appreciated.
I was given a lot of support and guidance and there was very thorough background knowledge on the role given so I felt like I wasn't completely lost. I also felt like I could ask anyone for help, and that I wasn't a nuisance. However again, the only downfall was not having much to do at some point in the internship.
It could vary day to day but overall I never felt stressed or under pressure to get a lot done in the day. Some days I stayed perhaps maybe 15 minutes after I could leave but usually my manager would tell me to go home and complete the work the following day. Also, some days could feel like they were dragging in as there wasn't much to do.
I feel like I was given quite a bit of responsibility, with the chance to meet clients and perform work for them which felt good and really helped with my understanding of the role and my confidence.
I feel like i improved a variety of personal skills even in the short time of the internship and I definitely feel like I can transfer these skills to other jobs/my degree in the future.
The Company
The general atmosphere was that everyone was very hardworking but also lighthearted at the same time. Nobody was too serious and everyone seemed very friendly. There seemed to be a lot of people who were friends outside of the office as well which seemed really nice and definitely something that's creates a nice working atmosphere.
I felt like the training at the start was very well set up however, as mentioned previously on numerous occasions, the work planned for the interns wasn't enough and I feel like at parts I wasn't able to make the most of my time there.
I feel like as a Summer Vacation Scheme student, the firm invested a lot in me in order to help me achieve a graduate position after the scheme. There was a lot of training and support on how to secure a graduate position and so I felt very valued by the company.
Company Parties/Events
I am yet to have my Graduate scheme interview but I have been fast tracked to a final partner interview, after which I hope to secure employment. I would be very interested in a graduate position with this company.
The Culture
As I was in a regional office which was quite small with few placement students, there wasn't a huge social scene but after the scheme I would definitely classify the other students as friends. As for colleagues, I was regularly invited out for lunch and there was an event in my first week in which there was food and drink, which was nice to get to know everyone.
I was lucky as the regional office I was in was very close to my family home and therefore didn't have to pay for living costs. However, the city (Belfast) is known to be cheap to socialise in, in comparison the rest of the UK.
I personally really enjoy the nightlife in Belfast but I may be biased as I am a student here, but I feel like there's a lot to do for such a small city and everything is within easy reach.
As I was there for a short time (3 weeks), I dont think I got the chance to really get involved but from what I heard from other colleagues there were a range of outside activities to get involved with, which had I been there longer I definitely would have done.
