About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my SVS placement. I had the opportunity to visit two client sites (Hogan Lovells and Tottenham Hotspur) and work with many people in the Consumer Business department, giving me a great insight into what life at Deloitte would be like.
Although my knowledge of accountancy was limited (I study languages at university) I felt that I was delegated a fair amount of work from the people I was working with. They made me feel that what I was doing was important for their work and therefore made me feel valued!
Again, I can't speak highly enough of the people I was working with. They all took me aside during my time with them for me to ask whatever questions I had about the firm/profession as a whole, and whenever I had a query over the work I was doing they were always quick to offer their help.
Although accountancy doesn't directly correlate to my study of languages at university, I would say that the skills I developed during the placement will definitely help me beyond my studies. It was my first time being exposed to businesses and how they operate, and all that information will be extremely useful in the future.
The Company
The placement was very well structured. Each week I was with a different client/team, which gave me a great insight into Deloitte as a whole, and the different opportunities within it. Also, the organisers arranged some social events for those on the SVS placement.
It was great. I really enjoyed my time working at Deloitte. The people were very hardworking, but also very personable and we had fun together.
I would say that the company invested quite a lot of time into training the SVS students. Our first two days consisted of some basic training in accountancy and how the technology works, and given that we all went to different client sites this showed that our development was very important to them. After every week we were also given feedback from the people we were working with, which is beneficial for both our development and Delotte.
Through my time at different client sites I really had the opportunity to understand what it was like to work at Deloitte. I got to see first hand the work that they were doing, and also how the job involves a lot of communication with people not only at Deloitte but at the client sites where they work.
Again, I feel I've really got to understand the company culture through my SVS placement. From my time at the firm I could see how hard-working and friendly the employees are. We went out for team lunches many times and also, at the social events some of the employees came to chat to the SVS students. I could tell that Deloitte is a great place to work.
There is no doubt that the SVS placement has encouraged me even further to go down the career path of accountancy. I will definitely be applying for the graduate scheme.
Everything Else
We were paid pro rata of a first-year graduate salary which I believe was very fair.
During our three weeks we had two social events where we had the chance to chat to current employees of the firm in different departments.
Although I believe there were enough social events where we were given the opportunity to chat to current employees of the firm, I feel that maybe there should have been a stand-up event. The main social event was at a restaurant, therefore we were seated and spoke to the people around us but didn't really have the opportunity to talk to other people in the room.
I heard about the community day where the employees take a day off work to help out in organised events.
I would definitely recommend this placement to a friend. I found it to be an incredibly informative experience, which has led to me wanting to go down the career path of accountancy.
