The Role
It was the most interesting, challenging and rewarding work experience I've ever had.
Interns are treated as new graduates: we are expected to produce accurate, rigorous work and network with traders, sales, and clients. The tables and graphs I produced were directly used in published reports. I felt I was needed and my contribution valued in the team.
My line manager, supervisors and buddies gave me a great deal of support throughout the internship. We set up frequent meetings to discuss my work and any questions or concerns I had. I had two formal performance reviews with my line manager, who provided very candid and helpful feedback for me to do better.
On a typical day I worked from 7am to 6 or 7pm. I was not expected to work longer than 12 hours. However, every minute counts in research because we follow markets very closely. We must produce quality, up-to-date analysis under significant time pressure.
Loads of responsibilities (I never had to ask for them): ranging from doing SWOT analysis to reporting newly released half-year results to traders.
A variety of skills: time management, communication, presentation, etc.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly and fun. Most of the times it was quiet as people focused on their work and conversations took place in Bloomberg. It was much more relaxed in the late afternoons.
Extraordinarily well-organised.
Enormous resources were poured in to train us and to make sure we got most from it. We had one-week training outside office prior to joining our respective desks, with free breakfast/lunch. I had my personal Bloomberg access and regular training/experience-sharing sessions delivered by both external speakers and senior bankers within the organisation.

It's a good time to get a job! There are plenty of opportunities within the bank and you should not have any problem getting one as long as you prove yourself in your internship.
The Culture
We had regular casual or formal gatherings for interns and colleagues within global research.
Living in the City of London is undoubtedly expensive, but the variety of restaurants/pubs means that you can always find bargains.
There are so many good restaurants/pubs around St Paul's that you will never be bored.
Yes, there are many, such as sports and volunteering.
