The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with Towers Watson as the people I worked with were really friendly and helpful. The internship was a really good opportunity to experience the type of work an actuary does, the work culture in the company and an insight into the actuarial profession. There were plenty of social events and post-work drinks so I was able to get to know my colleagues better and quickly feel like part of the team.
My colleagues were very helpful and I was always given many different tasks to work on so I would be able to get a feel of everything that is done within the business. I was treated with a lot respect and they were always willing to answer my questions and clarify my doubts.
My colleagues really took the time to explain things to me despite having a lot of other work to do. My line manager and the rest of the team were always there to provide assistance and support.
I was kept quite busy throughout my internship, from the very first day. I really enjoyed it as it was never boring. I look forward to going to work everyday because there is always something new to learn everyday.
I was generally responsible for small tasks as most of the work done in the office were very technical.
I believe that my internship will definitely enable me to relate my practical experience to my degree studies. I now understand what the benefits practice entails and it has helped me make an informed career decision. I have developed many new skills which I'm sure would be of great help in future.
The Company
The office was not very big, so everyone is very friendly and knew each other well. There are cakes and cookies in the pantry almost everyday, so that creates a nice and relaxed environment. People do tea rounds every now and then so that is another great way to know the people around you.
Everything was well organised. We had three training sessions and all three went on smoothly without any disruptions. It was obvious that a lot of thought and effort had gone into making the internship beneficial.
Much effort had gone into training and development. The company really gives a lot of importance to the professional development of its employees.
Company Parties/Events
The Culture
The social scene was fantastic. There were quite a number of parties, nights out and we always try to organise something for lunch every Friday. The office also has a good badminton team that meets fortnightly if everyone's not too busy.
I lived at home during my internship so it did not make a huge difference in terms of living expenses. Besides, Edinburgh is a good place to live and the cost of living is reasonable. Towers Watson offers reimbursement for travel and living costs.
The social events were really fun and is the perfect way to socialise and get to know your colleagues!
