The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with Barclays. The whole internship was a very steep learning curve. I gained a lot of new skills, knowledge and I enjoyed the challenging nature of the work I was given.
I received a huge amount of support and encouragement from my colleagues. They gave up lots of their time to teach and guide me during my internship. I felt very welcome in the team and they were very approachable people.
Having joined a highly analytical and technical role without prior knowledge in programming or statistics I was given a sufficient amount of support and guidance. I felt very comfortable asking questions and for help. My supervisors were very encouraging and welcoming.
I was given a project to work on throughout my internship. The project was very challenging and kept me busy all day every day. However I managed my time well so that I was able to meet with other people across the bank and gain a wider understanding of each business area within the firm.
I was given a project with clear aims and objectives, and I carried out the tasks and investigations required of me. However due to the complex and highly analytical nature of the project I was expected to seek help and guidance where necessary.
The challenging nature of my project encouraged me to develop my analytical, problem solving and presentation skills. All of which I am able to assist my in my degree and also in the work place.
The Company
-A very welcoming, friendly and lively atmosphere. -Team lunches almost every day. -Lots of cake, biscuits and donuts. -All colleagues were very hardworking
My project was well designed, with clear objectives and suggested timelines. I felt very valued and a lot of time was invested to ensure that I had a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.
-A week of training -Financial concepts -Professional skills -Excel -Corporate banking master class Colleagues across Barclays were very keen and willing to spend time with me to explain their roles and teach me about relevant financial concepts.
Company Parties/Events
Throughout the internship I was being assessed and had regular meetings with my supervisor to discuss my progress and performance. I have been offered a position on the graduate scheme and was informed of this on the last day of the internship.
The Culture
-The training week provided a good opportunity for us to get to know the other interns. -Event for the interns were organised by HR throughout the placement. -There were multiple team drinks and dinner after work.
I commuted from home, so I only paid for travel in London which was reasonably priced. Cost of socialising is far more expensive than student life, however it is affordable with the internship salary.
The bars were always busy and buzzing in Canary Wharf, and London always has nightlife to suit everyone's taste.
There were opportunities to get involved with citizenship programmes. HR also organised team activities outside of work for all of the interns.
