About You
The week was very insightful and thus very enjoyable. There was a wide focus on what underpins the investment bank and how a division's operations influence the wider scale of the firm.
I felt very valued since the event was set up very well and our timetable was filled with useful presentations and activities. What the week entailed was made very clear at the start so we could prepare in advance if necessary for certain events (such as relevant questions).
There was a lot of guidance however the were no formal training sessions. In terms of careers advice and why the bank/a specific division may be the best fit, the firm showed lots of support.
The information I received about the role I want to work towards (one that cannot be taken on a graduate programme) was very useful since I can make a long term plan for my future studies and where I should keep my focus over my university studies. For example, I have changed my university module choice to keep in line with the line of work and skills necessary to succeed in a certain division. However, for the specific role that I want to do in the future, there were lots of mixed opinions on the best skill set for that job. This was not particularly helpful however the more experienced individuals seemed a lot more confident in answering questions about job roles.
The Company
There was lots to do and the time/duration of activities was sufficient and effective. The friday was a half day which I feel could have been put to better use,
Among the students, there was a lot of enthusiasm and a friendly environment overall. We could have had maybe one more 'fun'/interactive activity instead of the array of presentations.
On the division specific day I learnt about why a certain skill set will allow me to succeed well in the bank (specific to the division). However there were no formal training sessions. There was an interactive/comedy talk on how to develop presentation skills which was very helpful in the following group presentation activity
The division specific rotations could have covered a broader spectrum of roles. Also, since we only had one day of division specific activities, there wasn't a lot of time to explore why a career in such division would be ideal.
From start to finish everyone was welcoming and supportive. Right through walking in on the first day we could see the efforts the firm has to charity involvement and working towards developing relationships through the arts. The corporate responsibility presentation also discussed this.
In terms of deciding whether or not to work in an investment bank, the insight week was perfect. For deciding the specific division I felt we should have had another days worth of rotations and shadowing,
Everything Else
All travel was/is currently being reimbursed. We were provided an apartment over the duration of the week also.
With many networking opportunities we managed to talk to lots of graduates...maybe too many. There is a benefit of talking to experienced individuals but there didn't seem to many many around for my division.
These were offered accompanied by food and/or drinks so there was a comfortable atmosphere. Everyone was very open, approachable and happy to discuss their roles and experiences.
The bank has a strong philanthropic effort and this was evident when networking and during a presentation.
Absolutely. Getting a first hand understating of how the ban works is a crucial step in finding the best career path for you!
