    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved my internship. It was a brilliant balance between being giving responsibility and never feeling out of my depth. There were always people round the office who I could ask questions of and everyone in work was always really friendly. I did so many different thing, spent some time with a partner, database work, sat in on meetings, calculations and made phone calls.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • One of my favourite things about the internship was that PwC allocated me a buddy when I joined. I was able to meet him before I started so I could ask him any questions. When I arrived, it already felt as though I had a friend in the team. We all went for lunch so I could get to know everyone and I can genuinely say I made some really good friends during my time.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I would say there is a general culture of supportiveness within the firm. I worked in a team with members ranging from Associates to Directors and Partners. Within the team I could ask questions of all members within the time. This is probably partner specific, but on my first day, the partner in my department came and introduced himself which I thought was really lovely.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This is probably fairly department specific as I worked in my team at one of their least busy times of the year. There was always something to do whether that be online training or chargeable work, I did definitely have to go and actively ask people if they had any work for me to do. I found this quite challenging when I first started, before I knew everyone properly, after a few weeks though it felt quite natural.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I thought I was given a really good level of responsibility. I was doing work which contributed to real clients, whether that be drafting a letter or taking meeting notes. Equally, people were very understanding of my lack of accountancy qualifications and pitched the work given at the appropriate level. I never felt out of my depth!

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I did an internship in accountancy although I do an entirely unrelated degree. Many of the technical elements of my work, therefore, are not directly transferrable. That said, my time at PwC really helped me, more generally, in terms of my research skills, commercial awareness and general financial knowledge.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was a really good balance in my office between fun and hard work. Everyone was always friendly and we'd go out for team lunches on a regular basis. It did not feel overly corporate or stuffy. That said, everyone is normally working very hard!

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation of my internship was fantastic! I was constantly informed promptly of decisions made during the recruitment process and feedback was offered throughout. All the paperwork and offer details were emailed to me promptly and it was always well organised. The induction events were well pitched and informative.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a residential induction with all the other interns. It was really nice to meet all the new people and there were many technical sessions with senior associates which prepared us for our roles. We also had a partner/director dinner which universally made us feel valued and like a valuable part of the company.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I received a job offer at the end of my internship, I've accepted it and I can't wait to go back in 2015!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were around 10 interns in our office. It was really good as, at our residential induction, we were all sat on the same table for some of the sessions - this provided us with a good opportunity to get to know each other. When we started, we did go out for drinks every couple of weeks although it was quite hard when some interns were out on audit.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I can't comment on living in Manchester, as I'm from there myself so I didn't pay rent. Socialising is fairly cheap, we used to go out for 2 pound cocktails on a Friday night!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Manchester is a great city in which to go out. There are loads of gig venues, clubs and bars all in and around the office and on Deansgate. The office is a stones throw away from Spinningfields which is a big financial district. We'd often go there for food or drinks after work.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I know there were opportunities to join sports teams in my office but I didn't really do this as I was only there for six weeks. I did go to the gym after work with people from my team though!
