The Role
The amount of hands-on experience provided from day one was really impressive. I was able to get an insight into various areas of the firm and gain an understanding of what PwC actually does for clients. We were also given the opportunity to present ideas we had worked on for a huge British media corporation in London, which really added to the experience. PwC invested a lot in making sure our intake bonded well, which helped massively!
The people at PwC were constantly happy to be approached, which makes working for the firm a million times easier and more enjoyable. I was expecting quite a strict corporate environment before I started and although it is a very professional place to work, I was quite shocked by how welcoming, interesting and helpful my colleagues were. They really gave me their time whenever I needed it.
There was always somebody at help to provide support. I worked closely with a Manager on our account, who helped me settle in very quickly to life at PwC. I had a lot of questions as I was new to the work and every time I needed guidance or support he would stop his work and turn to help me. Even if my team wasn't around, I could always find somebody in the office or within the Student Recruitment team, who worked really hard to make sure we had the best experience possible.
One of the things I enjoyed most about PwC was I wasn't expected to do ridiculous amounts of work. In general, the workload was still fairly heavy but I received a great deal of support to help me manage it. Very rarely I found myself with nothing to do, but as soon as I raised the issue I was moved on to the next piece of work, which was all necessary and not just work for the sake of keeping an intern busy. That didn't happen once. On most days I worked 8.45-5.15, which I found very healthy.
I was surprised by the responsibility our whole intake received. There was 10 of us spread across various business areas and we all spoke about how hands-on the experience was. One of my key outputs was a document that was uploaded to the system and is being used as one of the main documents for that workstream.
As previously mentioned, we were able to deliver a presentation to some very executive members of PwC and the client, in front of some 150+ people, which I saw as a challenge that I would never have undertaken before my 6 weeks at PwC. The amount of time and effort invested in presentation skills alone was enough to give me the confidence to present in front of 10x as many people as I previously had done. This aspect is definitely were PwC gets 10/10 from me. I literally did gain skills for life.
The Company
Very hard-working but calm. You can make friends very quickly at PwC which means the atmosphere is fun. We also had a lot of social events which not only helped us bond, but also made us a lot more relaxed going into the office.
The Student Recruitment teams had organised our placement very well. We had a brief induction where we were able to meet the rest of the intake (120 odd students), and this time was set aside to make sure we could set up our laptops and become familiar with the most important things about working at PwC. We also received in-depth training, considering the placement was only 6 weeks and rounded it off with another event for the whole intake in London.
As previously mentioned, there was a strong emphasis on how to present and be confident when presenting, not just to senior employees/clients, but also among each other. We covered a lot of different areas of Technology Consulting during the training which helped massively when it came to getting started with the work.

The Culture
Absolutely! We often ate out together and went for drinks. We had a social called 'First Friday' where the whole office was invited to drinks at a nice hotel. Our student group become very close over such a short space of time and we often spent weekends going on road trips somewhere or doing some sort of fun stuff!
Very fair. Social events provided by the firm often led to a cheap night out but in general, Belfast is a relatively cheap place to live and socialise in.
There was a fairly decent club literally right opposite the PwC building on the waterfront. The amount of pubs in Belfast was brilliant and obviously the Guinness always made sure the nightlife was spot on. We probably went to about 5 different clubs over the 6 weeks.
As it was such a short period of time, we couldn't get involved in too many activities organised by PwC, but the opportunity to do so was definitely there. One thing I really liked was that we were given the opportunity to work with local NI-based charities.
