The Role
I found it very useful and rewarding to gain experience in a real working environment compared to just learning skills and knowledge in university. I feel more confident in my ability thanks to my placement and feel like i am ready for employment.
Some of the responsibilities that i had during placement made me realise how seriously my role was taken. I was involved in projects that helped the company move forward and was always told how appreciated and good my work was by team leaders and supervisors.
My team leader and supervisor would always take time out of their busy schedules to make things clear for me or if i had any problems, they would always offer guidance or inform me who the best point of contact would be.
It differs from day to day depending on what projects i was working on. Some days it was quite hectic with support work and trying to manage projects at the same time, but other members of my team were always there to offer a helping hand and the other colleagues were understanding if you were honest with them and explained that you were quite busy.
Throughout the placement, my responsibility grew, i was handling serious projects that were impacting the whole company using my own ideas and having to use my own initiative to solve support issues
It has give me the motivation to succeed in university and come out with the highest possible grade. This is by being used to the working environment, therefore, not just turning up for lectures and going home afterwards, i am now going in on a 9 till 5 routine to read up on lectures and complete any outstanding work.
The Company
It was a relaxed office, without any pressure forced on you by superiors, everyone had time for each other and it was an overall great place to work.
As i was the first placement student at my location, it was a learning curve for both myself and my team leader. He would regularly ask me how i was getting on and if i was struggling with anything. There was frequent placement gatherings at the start of the year where we had the opportunity to meet the other students and get to know each other.
All of the training that i received from the company was the online corporate training that all employees had to undertake. There was also additional training courses relating to your job role. However, i wasn't training specifically in anything IT related and i just missed out on a project management training course as it was shortly after i returned to university.
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Very appealing, however, there isn't as many graduate jobs relating to my subject within the organisation. My supervisor recently messaged me and asked me for my contact details as there could be potential roles next year after i graduate.
The Culture
Definitely, before we started our placements, we were invited to an all day induction, where we had ice breakers and were able to meet other placement students. They also provided Pizza Hut which went down very well with me :D
I had to relocate to West Sussex (which the company paid £100 towards relocation fees) therefore had to use most of my wages for rent. The company had social meals and nights out every other month an i had to arrange a restaurant for one of them.
Brighton was only a 15 minute train journey and was always busy for nights out and had multiple bars and night clubs for all scenes of people.
Yes, i was part of the company 5 a side football team who played every Monday in Brighton. We also had meals out every 2 month and always went out afterwards.
