The Role
The work was perhaps the most interesting work I've ever done. For someone who is interested in defence/missiles, this internship was extremely interesting and enjoyable.
Towards the end of the placement (once I had picked up some knowledge), I was regularly asked for my opinion on work matters. Moreover, I was given important work to complete by myself and thus felt very valued.
My line manager had previously completed a summer internship a number of years ago and so understood the learning curve I was experiencing, He always made time to explain things and discuss my questions.
I tended to complete tasks quicker than expected, hence I sometimes found myself with little to do. But I was usually given more work if I asked for it.
As mentioned above, I was given real/important work to complete. I was trusted to complete this from the very outset, and I was treated like any other member of the team. This made for a very enjoyable placement.
The skills will certainly assist me when I return to the company after I graduate, and indeed would assist me in any enginering role at any company.
The Company
Pretty good atmosphere, colleagues were very friendly and approachable.
I was slotted into a busy team, and thus initially had to spend time by myself reading up on the project. Once I got going, the placement was fairly well structured - I was given a list of targets to complete by the end of the placement as well as having a meeting with my manager at the start and a meeting just before I left.
Not enough time to complete much training since I only did a 10 week placement. I did take a Security Course however. The training for the graduate scheme looks extremely promising however.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Above 25 days holiday
I have been offered a job on the graduate scheme as a direct result of my internship.
The Culture
Got to know the other placement students reasonably well.
About average. (Much cheaper than London too!)
Good choice of pubs etc in Bristol. About 10 clubs if that's what takes your fancy.
Our team went for a night out in Bristol. There were football teams and various other things organised by work. I wasn't there long enough to get involved though.
