The Role
It was my first ever placement, so naturally I really enjoyed working within a corporate environment.
The working culture within National Grid means everyone, no matter their level were well treated by everyone. There was a culture of mutual respect and appreciation.
My Managers and supervisors were great. I had a weekly and bi-weekly update on how I was doing. They were very approachable especially because it was an open plan office.
Sometimes experts Engineers would work out of office. This meant I was faced with some delays getting information vital to complete the task I had. This however, did not affect the deadline.
I worked on a real business project.
It certainly gave me more confidence as a whole and my team working has definitely improved. I am more likely to take a lead role when put into a team now.
The Company
The office was open-plan and everyone were very approachable.
We were expected and well planned for. Despite the fact that it was holiday the annual holiday season within the business, quite a few key people had to stay behind or take their holidays after we had completed our project.
Given the short time the placement was for, the company trained me up to working knowledge of the high voltage assets in order to complete my project. With time to show us how the whole electrical power transmission works across the UK. I learnt a lot about power generation and supply, having visted a power generator, some sub-stations and a refurbishment centre for Switch gears.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
Healthcare from home
I will be happy to return to National Grid if given the opportunity after graduation.
The Culture
I lived with all other fellow placement students, which made the whole summer more enjoyable.
The cost of living is generally high across the UK, so I did not expect to live for free.
Warwick is rather quiet compared to my usual abode of London, but as a group of placement students, we created our own entertainments.
There were loads of activities to choose from.
