The Role
The range of work that I was involved in was diverse and very interesting. This variety of work made the job enjoyable and engaging.
Due to the size of the department within which I worked, I quickly felt like a key member of the team. This was very important to me, if I had just been doing tasks to fill the day I would not have enjoyed the role half as much as I did. I am still in contact with almost all members of the department and hopefully it will remain that way.
Support from management was always present when I needed it. I was not hassled or hen pecked to jump through hoops, but if I required some guidance I could always ask.
The role I was in meant that if I was waiting on a response from a supplier or contact I could get on with other work. Basically, the more projects and work that I wanted to be involved I just had to ask.
Again, because I wanted the responsibility all I had to do was ask. This meant working with many different members of the company in different departments much more senior than myself. Reporting my findings or results and recommending actions accordingly.
Since returning to University I feel a lot more focused and determined, I have also found that my time management skills have become a lot better. I was not aware of these skills developing over the placement year, but that must have been where they came from.
The Company
Good atmosphere. Everyone seemed to enjoy what they did and in the whole got along.
After the mandatory health and safety presentations, IT was set up pretty quickly and I could settle into my role.
I didn't acquire any formal qualification during my placement, however I did develop a number of skills that I will carry forward from the role.
Very, I have agreed a graduate position with the company.
The Culture
I lived with the other placements so we naturally spent a lot of time together. I did a few cycling events with some co-workers and enjoyed the occasional night out.
We decided to live in a large house with the benefit of a swimming pool, compared with student accommodation it was fairly reasonable.
Good selection of bars, clubs and pubs. Maybe a little limited if you are from a big city.
We got involved with a fund raising event put on by the apprentices, but apart from that it was just events organised by us.
