The Role
It was an amazing opportunity and experience. Working at GSK was for me a real life changing development experience which I'll be able to carry forward with me for the rest of my career. GSK really focuses on personal development so you really do have control over your Placement. My main role throughout the placement was not necessarily entirely related to my Law. However, this experience has opened up so many doors for other possibilities and has since made me reconsider my career path.
My colleagues were so supportive and appreciative of all the work I did. It was continuously reinforced through weekly meetings and feedback in emails.
As my role stretched across two teams I had two managers. I was given both personal and work-related guidance throughout my year in 1-2-1 meetings by both my managers. I also worked with a number of other colleagues who were also extremely supportive. I have no doubt that the relationships I built with my managers will continue into the future.
At GSK you control your workload - it very much depends on how proactive you are in seeking work/new experiences. I stretched myself on a number of occasions juggling 10 projects most times. However, I loved being busy as it gave me the opportunity to be involved in more than just my role.
From day one I was given a lot of responsibility. Within three weeks I was a project manager and I continued to take on more responsibility as I went on throughout the year. Again, you control the amount of responsibility you have.
My Placement year was not just developing my skills but also a personal development. I came in so nervous and lacking in confidence and I walked out with the ability to communicate effectively. Yes I still get nervous, but, I am able to turn this into a positive. I learnt that life begins at the end of your comfort zone.
The Company
At GSK (House) there is no offices. It is all hot desks so you meet someone new every day. Each floor has its own different culture but, our floor was super fun!
Very organised and clear communications.
During my placement I undertook: a week's work experience in Trademarks, a sales visit and a number of site visits. Again, you own this - if you are interested in training then build a case to show why and speak with your manager. Obviously if it is £1000 it is unlikely. GSK also have some great courses that are free and online which were very useful!
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Subsidised Canteen
Financial Bonus
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The only negative about my placement year is that there is no direct entry onto a graduate scheme. You still have to go through the whole graduate process - it is tough!
The Culture
GSK has an IPUnite group who organise events outside of work.
It's London, it's expensive! But, as it is London there is loads to do! Just get Wowcher, Groupon and Why Plan (iphone app) for day events and look for student nights.
It is London! Expensive but so much fun!
