The Role
I greatly enjoyed my 6 week placement with Arup. I was fully engaged in exciting projects and the work was very interesting and challenging.
I felt very valued by my colleagues and felt like I was an integral part of the design team. They engaged me in many aspects of their work and were always willing to help me progress.
My colleagues were always willing to answer questions to help me progress. Clear tasks were set regularly with appreciable end goals so that I was confident from the outset of what was required of me and how this would aid the team in our design. However, it was often down to me to read documentation or computer software help guides to acquire the knowledge I required to complete the tasks.
I was pretty much busy for the entirety of my placement.
I was given quite alot of responsibility during the placement.
I feel the computer software GSA and RAM Structural System I learnt during my placement will be invaluable for my degree this year.
The Company
Was a very vibrant atmosphere with everyone sharing knowledge across the floor.
It was generally well organised. Although I didn't have a permanent desk, I was given a laptop on the first day so I could hotdesk. I was given work immediately upon arriving and never found myself twiddling my thumbs.
They were very willing to share their knowledge and expertise with me and was invited to join the graduate's on a couple of their skill's week events.
I will have a slightly better chance of getting a graduate job having done a summer placement but will still have to have an interview.
The Culture
We often went out for drinks after work and went out for a lunch a couple of times. I also went to the annual garden party for the whole office which was very well organised and good fun.
London is expensive but I think the salary reflects this.
Didn't go on any nights out but often went for drinks after work.
There were a variety of sports teams to join.
