The Role
I loved the fact I was treated like a real employee of EY. I wasn't just a "summer intern". I was expected to do work to the same standard as my colleagues and although that may be daunting, the responsibility was something I grew from.
Any issues I had there was always someone to turn to. Be that on "lync" or sitting behind me at the desk, I never felt 'alone' or 'lost'. They respected me just as much as they would any other colleague and were open and friendly from the outset. I felt comfortable talk to each and every one of them yet I still knew how to maintain my relationships in a professional manner.
I was given a "buddy" on day 1. Although he was not in the office for the majority of my time at EY, he was only ever a phone call away and was so helpful with anything I had to ask. I always had someone in charge of me for any task at hand and never felt like I didn't have anyone to turn to. I was given great support from my manager and even had the chance to work on a task with him. Aside from that, I was given support and guidance from colleagues who were not even allocated to me, they were all so helpful and understanding if I faced any challenges.
At the beginning of my internship I was really busy. Working 12 hour shifts on some days I was kept on my toes. Towards the end of my time at EY however the jobs started to reduce as it was turning into the quieter time for EY yet it allowed me to gain some insight into other areas of EY that I may not have had time to do if I was swamped with work!
Full responsibility, despite always having someone in charge of me, I was surprised how much responsibility we were given!
Lifetime skills and training I will forever value. I not only became much more confident in my academic ability, I grew a much better confidence in my social skills too.
The Company
It varied completely! Friday there was a certain buzz around the office however on some days when people were out at clients, it was fairly quiet.
Very well organised, I always had someone to turn to for work and was allocated to a number of jobs at my time at EY.
They taught me valuable skills that I could only gain at EY Introduced company values Allowed me the freedom to express my own opinion and personal aspects to work. Introduced me to work I would never have had the chance to.
Great! I can't wait to get started on my Grad job in September, it's a company I've always had my hopes up for and I'm so excited to be able to finally reach my goal and train for my CA Qualification.
The Culture
Yes absolutely, I think you got out of it what you put in. A number of interns did not get involved in activities but there were always opportunities to do so. I went to a Manchester United football match, something I never thought I would say. But it was all about the social aspect and I really enjoyed myself and was glad I went!
Totally normal. I was placed in Manchester for a week and found everything absolutely fine. For the remainder I was located in Edinburgh where I am at University so nothing was different!
Edinburgh always has a buzz about it! The Edinburgh Festival was on so I was never short of something to do. Despite being tired from working all week, the weekends were a great time to relax no matter what you wanted to do - there was always something!
As previously stated I went to a football match when I was down in Manchester which was great fun. I attended a few lunch events and even a fireworks evening in Edinburgh which was great - I do think there could have been a few more opportunities, possibly sports events which I never saw any evidence of, but I took any opportunity available.
