The Role
I enjoyed the 6 weeks as a whole. The internship provided me with plenty of experience of and I got to work with lots of great people.
I was definitely made to feel part of the team. I felt like my input was valued and I was assigned work at an appropriate level to contribute to the team effort of completing the audit.
The on-the-job coaching I received from more senior members on the team was invaluable. Everybody was always willing to answer any questions I had and would do their best to make sure I understood the task. We were assigned a buddy, of whom we could ask any questions in the run up to and during the internship. We were also assigned a mentor, who we met with at various stages of the internship to discuss any problems and to ensure we were gaining the most we could from the experience.
When I found myself working on a client where there wasn't enough work for me, I was released and assigned to a different client where there was work for me to do. I was never given too much work to complete.
I was responsible for completing the areas of audit that were assigned to me. My work contributed to the audit process so it was important that it was completed to a high standard. It was reassuring to know, however, that any work was always checked by senior members of the team before being included in the audit.
Learning to work well within a team and prioritise tasks in order of importance are skills that are transferable to many different disciplines. I have accepted an offer to work for EY when I graduate and the experience I gained on the internship will definitely help me when I return to the firm.
The Company
Everybody seemed to get along and know each other quite well, especially within service lines.
Very well organised, especially the induction programme in Manchester, which took place over three days for all the regional interns.
We were assigned a mentor to discuss where we felt we could improve and what opportunities could assist us to gain new skills.
National Travel
Most interns were offered a job with the firm after completing our internship. Personally, I am very much looking forward to returning to the firm when I graduate.
The Culture
Yes, there was a budget for socials for the interns. We often met up for lunch. Everybody got to know each other over the course of the 6 weeks.
I lived at home and commuted to Reading. Apparently, Reading is slightly cheaper than London.
Apparently Reading has some fairly decent clubs. There is a good selection of bars. London is only half an hour away by train.
There were fundraising challenges like London to Paris bike ride or 3 Peaks Challenge, but people had already signed up to these before we started at the firm and it was too late for us to join. However, I look forward to getting involved in CSR (corporate social responsibility) when I join in September.
