    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the 6 weeks as a whole. The internship provided me with plenty of experience of and I got to work with lots of great people.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was definitely made to feel part of the team. I felt like my input was valued and I was assigned work at an appropriate level to contribute to the team effort of completing the audit.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The on-the-job coaching I received from more senior members on the team was invaluable. Everybody was always willing to answer any questions I had and would do their best to make sure I understood the task. We were assigned a buddy, of whom we could ask any questions in the run up to and during the internship. We were also assigned a mentor, who we met with at various stages of the internship to discuss any problems and to ensure we were gaining the most we could from the experience.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • When I found myself working on a client where there wasn't enough work for me, I was released and assigned to a different client where there was work for me to do. I was never given too much work to complete.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for completing the areas of audit that were assigned to me. My work contributed to the audit process so it was important that it was completed to a high standard. It was reassuring to know, however, that any work was always checked by senior members of the team before being included in the audit.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Learning to work well within a team and prioritise tasks in order of importance are skills that are transferable to many different disciplines. I have accepted an offer to work for EY when I graduate and the experience I gained on the internship will definitely help me when I return to the firm.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was a budget for socials for the interns. We often met up for lunch. Everybody got to know each other over the course of the 6 weeks.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home and commuted to Reading. Apparently, Reading is slightly cheaper than London.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Apparently Reading has some fairly decent clubs. There is a good selection of bars. London is only half an hour away by train.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were fundraising challenges like London to Paris bike ride or 3 Peaks Challenge, but people had already signed up to these before we started at the firm and it was too late for us to join. However, I look forward to getting involved in CSR (corporate social responsibility) when I join in September.
