The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship in FSO Assurance working with the Asset Management team. I was given a lot of responsibility very early on, and introduced to both the planning and execution stages of several audits.
I felt highly valued by my colleagues; This was evident due to the fact that they would trust me to work on audits of small to medium sized hedge funds with tight deadlines that would crucially need to be met. When attending internal meetings with the asset management team, I was treated exactly the same as all other employees and my views and requests were taken into equal consideration.
A lot of the time I was left to my own devices. While this was often very daunting and even annoying at times since it was the first time I had attempted to complete such tasks, it also permitted me to learn on the job and pick things up very quickly with a proper understanding.
For the vast majority of the time, I always had work that needed to be completed. This includes client specific work given to me by my engagement manager as well as other more administrative tasks given to me by either my counsellor or my summer internship buddy.
I was given huge amounts of responsibility during my internship. I prepared and signed off parts of an audit for official clients despite it being my first time undertaking a lot of the tasks. I was also often left to my own devices and was trusted to finish the work in the allocated time.
While a job in Assurance in itself might not be too relevant to the completion of an economics degree, the skills I developed during the summer internship programme are very relevant. Working in a close knit team improved my teamwork skills that will help me with group presentations at university. I've also become a lot more independent and am more motivated to undertake independent research and study at university due to the fact that I was often left to my own devices on the internship. This will be particularly useful for my dissertation which involves research on applied economic theory.
The Company
Quite quiet most of the time with not too much social interaction during the day.
The internship was set up excellently with a good balance of technical training, work and social events.
We attended a three day induction at the start of the internship to introduce us to what we would be doing and how to get the most out of the experience. Within our individual teams, our engagement managers and senior colleagues also often sat down to explain the tasks to us in extensive detail.

Fantastic employment prospects with a lot of the interns managing to convert to a full-time graduate offer to start upon completion of their university studies. EY also offers outstanding support for studying towards a professional qualification.
The Culture
Excellent social scene with the summer internship team at EY organising two socials as well as a black tie event at the end of our internship. Interns also often organised informal events themselves and invited everyone to them.
I was living at home so the cost of living was a lot lower than it would be for others needing to find accommodation in London. Socialising at bars/pubs/clubs is also very expensive around the London Bridge area.
Great variety of nightlife including pubs just minutes away from the office, a range of restaurants and even multiple bars.
We undertook a CSR day as summer interns which was great fun and some others even joined some of EY's sports clubs over the course of their internship.
