    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • When I was set work, I found it very interesting and various members of staff were happy to go out of their way to help me. However, I had to constantly push for work to do and sometimes nothing was available. As a result, I spent quite a few hours completing online learning courses.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The feedback I received was very positive and helpful. I was also invited on numerous post-work events which helped me to feel part of the team.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The career counsellor scheme which EY run is, in my eyes, very productive. Even at internship level, each employee is assigned a more experienced colleague who will help guide them and assist with any changes in career or project which may be desired. My counsellor was extremely helpful in introducing me to teams I was interested in and arranging a partner-shadowing day.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This was the main shortfall of the internship. When I was working on a project, I tended to be extremely busy and really enjoyed it. However, there would often be times when projects fell through or were delayed, the nature of the business and so I would spend some days with very little to do. This was exacerbated by the rotation nature of my internship which meant there was only a one or two week window for me to work with a team and so if they were quite (or extremely busy), there was little room for my involvement.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This too depended on the team I worked with but at times I was preparing work for partner meetings, updating contact lists and agendas and sending out meeting notes.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • While I did learn many skills, I would have enjoyed the opportunity to work on any one project for a length of time to gain a depth in my skill set, rather than breadth.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • This too depended on the team I was working with. Some were very lively and open, which I preferred, while the non-client facing teams were much more reserved.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The centrally organised events for interns were extremely good and well organised. However, the department I worked with lacked experience in taking inters and so, at times, I was left wanting. Many members of staff were unaware of my presence, even if I had been assigned to their teams.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Once again, EY as a whole invested very heavily in their interns and that was apparent in their events and the support they offered. While I felt that my department could have been more organised for my arrival, some members of staff were extremely helpful and willing to go out of their way to assist me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. While initially the company organised some social events to encourage us to get to know each other, a facebook page was quickly set up between the interns and through this we organised numerous gatherings, This was one of the best parts of the internship.
