The Role
The internship was a great experience. Everyone was very helpful and I learnt a lot. In Direct Tax I was on a rotation scheme, which enabled me to gain an understanding of all the areas. EY encouraged me to try as much as possible - I spent a day in M&A and another in Audit, which helped me get a good picture of the company as a whole.
I felt that the amount of responsibility I was given enabled me to be of good value to my colleagues, who always thanked and commended my work.
There were various support mechanisms throughout my internship to make sure I was on the right track, such as feedback forms and a personal mentor, which made me feel supported. Furthermore, I felt that colleagues were mindful of the technical nature of some tasks, particularly within tax legislation, and so made the effort to make sure I fully understood the concepts.
Beginning work just before nine and finishing at half five, I never had boredom creep up on me, but at the same time the amount of work asked of me was not overbearing.
I felt that I was given enough responsibility as possible, given that I had not completed the professional training my colleagues had. I felt that I was given the correct amount of responsibility to match my knowledge and ability, accumulating as the internship continued.
The internship at EY has helped me understand the practical side of my course, being an accounting and economics student. More important than this, I feel it has equipped me with skills that will assist me in the workplace, such as presenting and time management, whilst improving my confidence.
The Company
Due to being on the second scheme of the summer, which is the least busy time of the year, a lot of the graduates were out of the office, however the colleagues I did work with were all very friendly, helpful, engaging and most importantly seemed interested in me.
The internship was everything I expected from a global company like EY - well thought out and organised, with excellent feedback and mentoring schemes. However, along with this tried and tested structure, I was given the flexibility to seek mini secondments to other areas of the company which was a brilliant feature of the internship.
The company always ensured that I had the appropriate amount of technical training to complete tasks given to me. Furthermore, I felt that many skills such as business development were built on during the internship long presentation project. I was provided with feedback on my progress and was also encouraged to self-assess, a useful process that I had no experience of previously.

As I have applied for a role in a different department, audit, the process has been lengthened and so I have to attend a further interview before possibly receiving an offer.
The Culture
As I was on the second scheme of the summer there were less fellow placements students to socialise with, but they were still friendly and we met up once or twice outside of work.
I was given a place in Manchester, where I was already living and studying so completed the internship at no extra cost.
Manchester has something for everyone, Northern Quarter bars, huge nightclubs with all type of music and lots of theatres, plus the Cornerhouse, a quirky cinema I loved.
Compared to the London office, there are less opportunities, but I enjoyed playing football and was invited to go for drinks a few times.
