The Role
The internship at Virgin Media was great and it has been hugely beneficial to me in regards to what career I wish to pursue after graduation. The skills I have learned and developed during my internship have really helped me become more focused in my third year at university. Karen and the team who ran the internship were excellent. Considering the year I did the internship was the first year Virgin Media started running the internships it was thoroughly organised and their were never are any problems. Karen was always on hand if you needed any help or had any problems. Anyone thinking of applying to do the internship with Virgin Media should definitely consider it as you will learn a tremendous amount during the year, I learnt a tremendous amount more in my internship than in my two years at university.
I felt valued a lot by my colleagues particularly the analysts in my team. I do however think the higher level management in my team did not value how quickly I picked up the skills to do the required role which was disappointing as it was not reflected in my review scores.
Management and supervisors were always on hand if I needed any help or problems. They always gave constructive feedback which has helped me to develop not only in my role but as a person. My line manager I had in the second half of my internship was excellent and extremely supportive. The 'buddy' I was given was incredibly helpful. I would not have learned what I have done in this internship without him and was very lucky to be placed with him.
The work in my internship was project based. During the beginning of my internship I was learning to use SQL so I was not given any projects therefore wasn't particularly busy. Once I had started to pick up the skills I became a lot more busier and as the internship went on I was given larger scale projects which ensured I was always busy during my internship.
Once I was given my own projects a lot of responsibility was given. My work was really making a significant change to the business which was really surprising considering I was just an intern. One of my projects involved segmenting a customer base which has 200,000+ plus customers which illustrates the level of responsibility I was given.
The skills I have developed will help me throughout my career. What I did during my internship also looks excellent on my CV as it illustrates to future employers how I have not only learned new skills but applied them in a commercial environment thanks to the internship. Anyone in their second year considering doing an internship should seriously consider applying with Virgin Media. What I have learned in my one year doing the internship has been a tremendous amount more than in my years at university.
The Company
The office atmosphere was great and the people in my team were very welcoming when I first started which made me a lot more comfortable in my internship.
It was excellent, Karen did a fantastic job at setting up the internship for us interns. She regularly ran training events including one at Spy Headquarters which was thoroughly enjoyable
The company sent me on 3-4 training events during my year which helped develop my skills. The company helps you a tremendous amount in your development.
Flexi Time

National Travel
Financial Bonus

Above 25 days holiday
Unfortunately Virgin are not doing a graduate scheme in the career I wish to pursue, however if there is a graduate scheme which you want to do with the company whilst you are an intern Karen will really help and support you to do it.
The Culture
Yes their was a good social scene when we met up at training events with fellows interns. In regards to social scene amongst colleagues it is the luck of the draw. My work colleagues were quite a lot older than me so I didn't do a lot with them apart from the Xmas Party and 1 other social scene.
I worked in Birmingham so the cost of living was average, however the office is on the outskirts of Birmingham so a significant part of my weekdays was spent on public transport stuck in traffic.
Very good as their are lots of students in Birmingham so there is something to do on every night if you wished
Not particularly however I didn't actively pursue any opportunities so I don't really know.
