The Role
I really enjoyed my internship with EY, Everyone was really friendly and I always had work to do.
I felt a valued resource for the team, I assisted a number of different colleagues who were always grateful for help and happy to answer any questions I had.
I didn't feel I had a manager or a 'go-to' person for work but apparently that is normal. My buddy made an effort to regularly catch up and communicate with other members of the team to help organise work but I felt that it was very much up to me to approach the members of the team and ask for work if I wasn't particularly busy. I met with my counsellor three times as he was very busy but felt that the meetings were more of a formality than any major support or guidance. However, I know that if I had any issues both my buddy and counsellor would have been a great form of support to sort any problems I had.
I was pretty much always busy! I was always doing various pieces of work for different people, or spent a few days working on a single project with someone. If I wasn't doing work I was in client meetings or going out for coffee with my buddy,
I wasn't given that much responsibility but that is the nature of Restructuring. I was left to my own devices to get on with work but there was always someone to double check the work I had completed. I felt I was given more responsibility as the internship went on and proved myself to the team.
I definitely found the internship useful in terms of getting to grips with computer software, databases and Microsoft Office. It was a good introduction to working in professional services, the types of work and projects I will work on and the general working environment.
The Company
The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming, everyone had time to help and answer any queries. The team was very diverse in terms of age and levels of experience too, everyone was different.
Very well organised induction week, the rest of my time I was more of a source of help to the whole team (I was there to help when as and when needed - which is apparently the nature of restructuring but I always had something to do)
I felt the team fully invested in me, they were keen to show me get me involved on different projects to enhance my experience within restructuring and were keen to show me how to use different programs, software, databases and different computer skills.
I have just signed a training contract with EY because of the good working environment, my existing relationship with the team, solid future prospects and range of benefits provided.
The Culture
Not so much as there were only six interns on my scheme, we regularly met up for lunch though which was nice. I spent more time socially with the team. I know as a graduate there would be more things to get involved in.
I was based in Manchester - It was like any other northern city, cheap comparable to elsewhere. You can live cheap or expensive depending on where you go etc.
I went out practically every weekend I was there, Deansgate is really nice and Manchester in general has some really good bars to visit day and night. I still feel there was a lot more to see though!
I went to a young professionals networking social, there was a women's social meal I had the opportunity to get involved with too.
